Congrats Vitrac. Who knows. Maybe New Yorkers got their notifications early? I am assuming want2go is from NY as well since she met with Hillary Clinton and Chuck Shumer. I may be stretching here. Hard to get correct information. Congrats to all who received one.

vitrac, congrats! what kind of community service did your daughter do?

She started a few endeavors. One was–she collects used dance recital costumes and distributes them internationally (Africa, Central America and the US) to poor and sick kids. The pictures of these kids dancing in the costumes are , in my opinion, inspiring. She also started a club in her school (difficult to achieve) where the members investigate and study areas of injustice or cruelty and raise money to achieve some goal. Areas of interest included Darfur refugees, puppy mills and child sex trafficking. Both of d’s projects required leadership skills and a commitment to many, many hours of work. The letter she received, in a leather bound folder, recited these achievements by name. It was a wonderful personal touch. I know that so many applicants submitted evidence of really worthwhile projects. It’s humbling to see her recognized in this way.

wow that sounds amazing. i still haven’t heard. i’m hoping it’s because my permanent address is allllll the way over in seattle, but we’ll see! i suppose we’ll all know for sure within a few days.

Congrats!! Great work. Did she also receive amerit scholarship, vitrac? The 2 can be stacked.

It was sent UPS 2d day air and delivered to my front door which is NEVER used. It had been sitting there for a day before I realized someone had to check in places other than my mailbox at the curb. No she did not receive merit, and we are still evaluating if this scholarship, while generous, is generous enough.

hmm, so maybe they have already sent out notification for winners? or just the 15k awards? who knows, lol, i could guess at it forever.

After reading the two amazing examples of those who have been notified, I am sort of doubtful that my D will receive a CSS. I really thought she had a great chance because Community Service is her passion and the reason she was so attracted to Tulane (amongst other things) is because of their philosophy on public service. Right in line with her passion. BUT…she didn’t start any organizations, either locally or internationally. Just been very involved and commited to a few organizations here where we live. She is president of her service club at school (which is not a name-only position - very time intensive and a large commitment), and has brought new organizations into the picture that their club can provide assistance to. Also has volunteered for the last four years at a hispanic after school tutoring program, another program that provides meals and fellowship for homeless people in our community (she was in charge of their largest fundraiser this year) and participated in a language immersion/community service program this past summer in Ecuador. There are a couple of other organizations, but her involvement with them is not quite as involved.

Congrats to those who have won so far. I am blown away by your achievements. Very impressive.

I think you are being needlessly pessimistic. Sounds like your d has done plenty. And the awards range from $5K-$15K. Keep us posted.

Just confirmed that award notifications were sent out late last week so everyone who will be receiving an award should have already received their notification. Everyone else who applied will be receiving a letter any day now. Also confirmed that my D didn’t get one, but that’s okay. At least we know now and can start piecing finances together. There were hundreds of applications and only 30 CSS handed out, so it was very competetive. Again, congrats to everyone who received a CSS. All of your accomplishments are incredible and your awards well deserved. Roll Wave!!

I received an email saying that I didn’t receive it.

did you get the email today?

Sorry to hear that cmb, but that is quite a girl you have. I hope Tulane is still lucky enough to get her.

@ gabby, lol. You greedy thing (joking!). I don’t think you can get the DHS and the CSS, but would be sweet for a person that did!

hahaha I didn’t think I could receive both, nor did I expect to after hearing some of these amazing accomplishments. I was surprised that they sent the email. But, yes it definitely would be very nice :)

sorry about the bad news, cmb. i haven’t heard either way but i emailed my counselor a few hours ago to find out, though i’m sure my news is the same as yours. oh well, i suppose we couldn’t all win now could we? back to the drawing board.

Thanks fallenchemist and cneelz. And Tulane is definitely where she is going FC. She wouldn’t be happy any place else. It really is the perfect school for her and we’re all thrilled that is where she will be. Her deposit has been paid for a couple of months now. We just were thinking that she had a good shot at a CSS (that is until we started reading about some of the recipients. Amazing kids!). But she was lucky enough to receive merit and we are thrilled with that. Just need to do a little refiguring of the finances, if you know what I mean. She has already found her roommate and we’ve paid for an orientation session. So it is Tulane all the way!

I, too, would like to thank you FC for all of your help and insight with this Tulane blog. It has been so helpful. I can handle any New Orleans info, but you have a wealth of information as far as Tulane goes. Maybe we’ll meet at parents weekend or something. Speaking of parents weekend, I was disappointed that my favorite B&B was already booked up. Checked a month ago and no room at the inn. But I have lots of other places to chose from. It’s just that one is my absolute favorite.

You are so welcome cmb. I thought Tulane was the decision, but things change sometimes. Anyway, so glad to hear she is already so set! Even a roommate, amazing. You must have so much less anxiety now. Nice feeling, isn’t it?

Does anyone know if everyone will or has received an email saying they did not receive the scholarship? Because I haven’t heard yes or no yet.

I don’t know if you have yours set up or not but, I received the email on my gibson email not my regular email.

I haven’t heard yet either, so I’m assuming I didn’t get it. I’m pretty disappointed, because I’ve done well over 1,000 hours of service, am the head/organizer of several service organizations, and have shown a pretty consistent dedication to global service and development. I would definitely be looking more closely at Tulane had I received it. Luckily, I’ve gotten other merit offers from CMC and Davidson (and acceptances to Wes and Bowdoin), so I still have some options. The people who received the CSS must have been amazing, though-- I had no idea it was SO competitive!
