Community Service

Does anyone know what the President’s Volunteer Service Award is? I have received several gold awards and I was wondering if it has any affect on college admissions. Should I mention it in my applications and if so, where? Also, I was wondering if church volunteer work is something that I should mention as well. Every Sunday, I volunteer for Sunday school, each summer I volunteer for Vacation bible school, and go on mission trips. I am in the LEO Club at my school and created a homeless club in which we collect food every month. Are these enough extra curriculars/ community service or do i need more? Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, and I’m on the golf team/ tennis team

No college requires voluntarism. That’s a myth. There are no minimum hours needed. Do what you want to do as if no one ever tallied your hours. In the end, list what you’ve done. What you’ve listed isn’t atypical or extraordinary, but hopefully people around you have been bettered

Bump

anyone? kinda desperate //:

There’s no such thing as enough community service. It’s not like colleges have a hidden requirement of 100, 200 or 500 hours to be considered viable. In college admissions, the awards can’t hurt, but probably won’t be the determining factor of your application.

You could volunteer for 1000 hours and still not get into the college of your dreams. Accept that fact and do whatever you want in high school. If you like volunteering at church, helping homeless people, if it brings you pleasure, then keep doing it for the fun of it. Don’t let college be the main motivation of your actions.

Ok thank you!! I was just wondering how great of an effect community service has on college admissions. I really do enjoy helping others. I don’t do these activities just to put them on my applications.

@exsxxp , your last two sentences are what is important. You could make an essay about that. Just be sure that your volunteering doesn’t interfere with grades. Grades and test scores are super important. Good luck!
