SO i have been inolved in an active community service for three years (9th, 10th, 11th). This involved going to New Orleans and helping rebuild with an organization down there. The thing is the organization is not orientated for highschool students but I am doing it with an old group of friends. Because of this they do not "like" to sign off on community service hours. After my sumemr going into junior year i asked if i could get at least 40 hours (what i need to graduate) and they agreed. (i had been there for a week). so now i only have 40 hours of community service that is actually signed off, or registered, or whatever it is called. When colleges see that i only hae 40 hours singed off but have been involved with this throughout all of highschool, what will they think? ( i plan on writing in this in my college essay, maybe explaining it there as well)

As far as I know, colleges aren’t going to actually see how many hours of community service you’ve done, unless you put it down in your application.

To be honest, I wouldn’t even mention the number of hours in your application, unless it specifically asks…and the commonapp doesn’t. It makes activities sound frivolous.

If you’ve really been doing something for many hours, I’d put down the hours you have been doing it.

Anyway, you don’t necessarily have to document all your community service. What I’m doing is just providing some contact details for colleges if they want to verify what I claim on my community service.
