Hello, I am looking for suggestions for my community service at the school I go to...

What I am looking for:
-Something unique, long-term (can be done throughout the year), practical, and profound (more hands-on and realistic)

I live around the LA area, so any suggestions would be nice.

There are a lot of service activities at the school I go to, so I was looking for suggestions for something new and fresh...
Here's what my school already has
- Habitat for Humanity
- Global Citizens Corp (donations to disaster relief, etc)
- Food drives
- Red Cross
- Amnesty International
- Highway cleanups
- Prison Library Project
- Blood donations
- Tutoring children

Please please please, any suggestions would be great, I just need something specific that I can carry on throughout the year. Thanks!!

The more interesting services can’t be done on a weekly basis. When I did (am doing) Habitat for Humanity, it’s done once ever two months or something. There’s even a waiting list for groups to work on projects.

If you’re looking for something more consistent, you should just volunteer at the library. I got a citation from the NJ General Assembly for working in the library lol, so that was good enough for me.

There’s also Big Brothers Big Sisters, in addition to any local organizations LA would have.

^ Just wondering – do volunteers have to pay/donate money for Habitat for Humanity?

The best community service stuff is stuff that you’re passionate in. For example, I am very into golf (on team, placed in some regional individual tournaments, etc.) so I volunteered at the First Tee where I was an instructor. I also enjoy math, especially teaching it, so I worked in my high school’s math-help room. Likewise, I have thought about giving free piano lessons because I love piano, but I don’t think I’m good enough to give lessons. I could probably be a solid teacher for a year, two at most, though.

So think about what you are passionate in. Generally, there is volunteer work that corresponds to this, especially when you live in a metro area.

You don’t have to pay any money to do Habitat. It was really fun, btw, when I did it.

Nah, we didn’t need to pay a fee.

Start with anything you’re passionate about, anything on that list that appeals to you. Every single one of these CAN become unique … depending on what you do and how far you go…

^^^^^ Thanks. I was always interested in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, but the last time I checked for my county on their website, one of the requirements were to donate $100 or so in order to volunteer (which I thought was rather odd).

youthinkwell? I’m volunteering with that organization.
