Community Service

How Important is community service in the application process for say the HADES and Kent, Loomis,Taft,Blair and other schools of similar caliber ?

Pretty important. Join a club in your school dedicated to community service.

If it means anything, I’m going to Blair and I’m in two service organizations.

Thanks Bamagirl but will it hurt my app if I’m in 3 clubs but for only 1 year.

Swissbrit: I am sorry but honestly I think having one 1 year clubs may have hurt me in the app process. I had 4 clubs, all but one were 1 year clubs. The other was a 2 year club. I called up the admission office at one of the schools and they mentioned that I should be more involved and get leadership positions and do clubs for more than one year. Is there anyway to join one this year? so you can say you did it in 8th and 9th grade.

There aren’t really any clubs in my middle school :/

That was the same issue I had…

You can start up community service though.

I didn’t really have any community service and i got into exeter if that means anything…

Yeah ima do community service lol.

This year is going to be do or die time for me haha. I will seriously do whatever it takes to get into one of the schools on my list with enough FA.

Same lol.Bump.

Swiss-start a club, even if yo are going to bs help your school start something. My d and 3 friends started eating lunch with the chinese teacher with the promise that they would only speak chinese. Now the teacher, seeing their commitment, is giving up her personal time to have an after school mahjong(sp) club.

This is now leading to doing some community service in Chicago’s Chinatown area.

community service is the least important part of the application. Schools realize that not many 12/13 yr old kids will be accepted by non-profits as volunteers, and that it is an onerous stuff for the parents that need to drive them places. As far as clubs are concerned - its always better to be in 1 for several years (demonstrating your commitment ) rather then in several for one year.

Well what if I have French Horn - 7 Years , Soccer -6 Years European High Level, Squash- 2 Years,JV Crew-1 year, 2-3 Clubs for 1 year and a bit of community service ? Does that sound well rounded ?

i think so, but then again im not an admissions officer or anything

Ok well thanks for the info and if you say you do an instrument, do you have to send a sample of music ?

Eh, it depends on the school.

OHh I hope I don’t have to lol.
