Community Service

I know this may sound stupid, but I only have a rough record of the dates I have performed community service. I have done community service in various ways.

Do I need to have an actual record of the hours I have performed?

Also, I am involved in many projects of community service in which I serve 10-20 hours at a time. Am I allowed to include these hours into my total count up? Or do the hours have to come from routine organization led services?

I'd think it be silly to have to leave out service hours because they weren't not from a routined service activity, but I don't know how colleges do it.

Thank you,
Brian Kim

You may include any hours in which you participated in some sort of community service, whether it was organized by an official organization or your friends. You do not need an official, signed log of your hours or anything like that, but do know that simply writing “Community Service, 500 hours total” is unlikely to impress adcoms.

What causes are you most passionate about? Have you spent most of your time on one particular kind of service–medical care, tutoring, Habitat? Make sure to highlight the cause(s) you are most involved in.

Thank you so much for your reply.
