What’s Georgia tech community like? Are student majorly competitve with each other or does ithey have a sense of community? Are teachers strict and uptight or do they have a nurturing touch? Any other info is appreciated on the school I have yet to visit.
My child is a freshman and has found the community very supportive and lots of resources to help - office hours, one on one tutoring, study groups, review sessions by TAs before tests. Some of the freshman dorms have learning centers with tutors and they have evening hours. I hope you get the opportunity to visit Tech. Best of luck!
My son is a junior. He is glad he is there. There are a lot of resources that students can take advantage of which are very helpful of but I personally haven’t heard anyone say nurturing and Georgia Tech in the same sentence.
My D is also a junior and feels pretty much like MichiganGeorgia’s kid. She feels like the fellow students are pretty helpful but I don’t think she feels “nurtured” by the faculty. Except for maybe just a few in her major. Lots of things to take advantage of -but no hand holding.
I’m a current second year! Georgia Tech is definitely not a competitive environment. It’s hard for sure, but pretty much everyone is willing to help you. Our environment is pretty collaborative and you’re highly encouraged to attend office hours, ta office hours, help desk, or free individual tutoring sessions.
As for a sense of community, we’re all proud to be Yellow Jackets. This is most visible at football games, but we’re huge on spirit in general - our school spirit club is really hard to get into due to high demand (http://www.reckclub.org/).
Let me know if I can help with anything else!
