Commuter students at Columbia?

So my question is what percentage of the students don't live in the dorms? Since I live nearby, it is pretty pointless to spend money on a dorm when I can stay for free with my family.
Also, is it true that they have a commuter lounge?
Thanks!

They do want all first years to live on campus. If you choose to commute, you lose guaranteed housing i believe. Depending on your fin aid situation, room and board are covered.

I know multiple people who live mere blocks away from campus. They all have and will live in dorms throughout undergraduate studies.

If you would willingly excuse yourself from dorm life, then I think you should reconsider attending a school like Columbia. In my opinion, a large part of the price you pay is the exposure to brilliant and motivated peers. Living with these people is by far the best way to make connections and learn.

I hope you reconsider your intentions.
