How to deal with this? Any tips? I take the bus and the subway and it takes me 2 hours to get to the school. I have classes starting from 9 AM and ending at 6 PM on most days of the week, and I barely have time to do anything else except staying up until 2 AM doing homework and waking up at 5 AM.

For those who have long commutes: Did you get used to it or is it just as bad in your second and third year?

sleeping 3 hrs a day is never a good thing, that’s for sure. I would seriously change something about that. How many classes did you skip last year?

also, if it takes you 2 hrs for one way, shouldn’t it take you 4 hrs round trip? that’s 20% of your day. hope you can find something useful to do (maybe sleepnig)

Is there any way you could shorten your commute by taking classes at off peak hours? When I commuted, I shaved a good half hour/45 minutes by taking classes later (after morning rush hour, and not leaving until after or before evening rush hour).

"…it takes me 2 hours to get to the school."

Are you commuting a total of 2 hours a day or 4? You can get a lot reading done. But, that has to be draining. I once had an hour and 10 minute commute one way and I drove. It was tiring and I did it for almost 3 years. At least you can read. But, if it’s 2 hours one way, yikes.

I wish I could afford a car, life would be so much easier.

By car, the commute does not exceed 30 minutes. Unfortunately, that is not an option. I can’t even start saving up, as I’d have to cut back on basic needs, such as food.

Oh, this is my first year. I got quite used to 3 hours of sleep per day. Coffee works.

I know. I feel I could be doing something much more productive during that time, and it is very difficult to try to do homework on the bus or the subway.

trust me. 3 hrs of sleep is going to bite you in the a** not too far down the road. coffee is a short term remedy. Plus, I heard it makes you loose focus. And you don’t really want to be one of those caffeine addicts. The lack of sleep leads to really bad performance in your daily activities, even though you may not realize it. It weakens your immune system, which will really start to take effect once winter rolls around (hope you don’t live in the freaking midwest :(). Be smart, get the sleep your body needs.

I’m confused. Are you working during the day? Is that why you’re at school from 9 until 6? Because if not, you should have a LOT of time in between classes to do homework. You would have to be taking a ridiculous amount of credits to be in class THAT much.

For 2 of my classes (honors physics and honors chem) I have 1 3 hour lab each, on different days. The rest of the time is either in tutorials, lectures, or either 1 hour to just eat lunch or go to one of the help centers for any of my courses I need help with at the time.

I also commute a long distance to school, because I want to save money and live at home. I either ride the one bus out of our little county to the city, which leaves at 6 am and returns at 7 pm, or I drive the one-hour plus. I don’t think I will ever get used to it, because I now have a weekend job, also far away in the city, which has very late hours. I am really having a hard time switching between early weekdays and late weekends.

I also find that I don’t eat well, if at all, during my long commute days. I am a freshman, and also wonder if people do this all four years, and if so, do they get used to it!
