Commuting Students

My son is a commuting student and was happy to be accepted into the Urban Plunge Program these past few days. We were told to pack bed sheets and toiletries as he would be bunking with another Urban Plunge student for 2-3 nights.

I just found out that my son was put in with 3 other freshman Urban Plunge students and shared a suite-style dorm with an Urban Plunge leader who is a junior. The beds were all taken in the suite, and my son and the other 3 freshmen had to sleep on the floor. (There was 1 couch available, which they alternated using.)

I can't believe that on a campus with all that housing they couldn't find decent beds for these boys to sleep in. I don't know how many other commuters had the same rooming arrangement.

I really hope this is not an indication of commuters being treated like second-class citizens on campus. Right now, this has given me a bad feeling. I pray I'm overreacting, as Moms tend to do.

Was this at the Bronx campus?

My S doesn’t commute to Fordham and didn’t do urban plunge…BUT as a parent I would say that if you are upset about what happened, you or your son has every right to call the person who was in charge of urban plunge and express your disappointment in the housing situation. Hope your S enjoyed urban plunge despite the housing issues and has a great experience at Fordham.

Thanks for the response. Yes, he did enjoy Urban Plunge, even though Ms. Irene cut it short.

And yes, it was the Bronx campus.

FYI, My son had a friend over from Fordham (both are at RH) and the topic of commuters on campus came up. Both of them felt that there were two types of commuters – some kids come to Fordham, go classes, and go home while others make an effort (and it is an effort) to get involved, hang out/eat at the school, find friends on campus, sometimes stay over with them. I guess what I got out of it is that a student can have very different experiences as a commuter - I think that by doing urban plunge, your S has started off in a great direction. Good luck to him.

My son went through the orientation, and there are a lot of special opportunities for commuters. I’m happy to say my fears have been put to rest.
