Commuting to NYU

I wonder how many freshmen commute? Is it more difficult than living on "campus"? Anyone with experience doing so.
Also, if people are renting apartments/rooms - is there a typical area to look for one?

The majority of the undergraduates live on campus in dorms
it’s definitely more difficult than living on campus because of transit times…you need to manage your time better
if you rent apartments/rooms you really just choose a place that is being rented…closer the more expensive ofcourse

I see, my commute is not bad (under 1 hour) and i’d like flexibility of renting a place if needed . Is it manageable from class schedule perspective though (eg are classes go through the full day, if so, i there a place to sit in between?) Also, is Friday schedule similar to the rest of the week? (this is for Stern btw)

It’s definitely manageable, i know a few people who actually have to commute 90mins each way and they seem fine. There’s also a “commuters lounge” on the 2nd floor of the kimmel (students activity building) so u guys can bond. If classes are a full day…you can always chill in the commuters lounge or the library (id prefer the library tbh)…even if you dorm at NYU you’re probably going to spend a good amount of time outside anyways (unless you are a lowlife computer gamer or a super antisocial person) Your schedule depends on you tbh…you can move classes around so u only have classes 4 days a week (some people do that in lieu of a full week of classes for a day just for interning, some people even do 3 days a week of classes leaving 2 business days for interning)…or just for the sake of not having classes 5 days a week :P

Many people commute, and for a school as expensive as NYU, you’re better off commuting than dorming especially if your commute is under an hour like you said. It is harder to make new friends as quickly as dormers do, but if you want, you can decide to dorm freshman year in order to help you make friends and adjust to college faster and then either commute the next 3 years or if you dorm for 2 years, you can even try for an RA position (which you need to be junior or senior for) to get free housing. You can also try to become friends with dormers and maybe you can stay over sometimes and make new friends that way too.

“Lowlife computer gamer” - Spoken as someone who hasn’t seen much of the world. Agree with the rest of the post though. You can even compact your schedule so you only have class 2 days a week if you go into registration with a gameplan.

If you’re going to commute there will be times when you will be too tired to go home - check out these two links describing an inexpensive hotel option nearby for NYU commuters:

Hey lol, that lowlife computer gamer is true :P…the kids who are all like “YES FINALLY I CAN PLAY GAMES WITHOUT MODERATION” are usually the kids who stay cramped up in their room all day without socializing…only leaving for food and classes. Ive heard stores about these species :F i hear they are very different

Every hobby has their obsessives - it just so happens gaming is a lot more prevalent and accessible so there’s more nutty gamers. Observation bias. I would argue the much more common college student who drinks every other day is far more destructive on an individual and societal level. I used to game quite a bit at NYU, and almost everyone I played with is successful and leading very active lives. The manic, anti-social gamer isn’t a myth, but it’s also far from common (and usually shunned as much in game as out).

Also, giants86 if you end up going to NYU and you want to secure the class schedule you want, I have a very handy tip for getting a good registration time  Just PM me.

synergy i tried pming u and it said your pm storage was full lol, can u pm me the tip? :D

Yeah I saw :stuck_out_tongue: Fixed that.

Edit: Apparently not, but now it is. No offense to CC but the 50 inbox/outbox limit is quite annoying.

i would like to hear this tip too!
