Commuting to NYU

Does NYU give you MetroCards to travel or is there any special deals for students with the MTA who need to travel? Or would it be worth it to buy a 30 day unlimited MetroCard?

Since NYU has its own bus system, they don’t feel the need to subsidize Metrocards, and the MTA isn’t even giving discounts to the disabled, so there definitely isn’t anything available for students. If you’re traveling every day, the monthly Metrocard is definitely worth it.

However, NJTransit offers student discounts on buses, trains, and light rail.

try to do the math about how much you’ll really be using the card. i think they’re jacking the price of the monthly unlimited cards and it might not be worth it. sometimes, even though it seems weird, it’s cheaper to get the pay-per-ride.

i buy a ~$40 card with some bonus. good enough for regular weekday commuting 5 times a week for each month. my traveling is erratic so the monthly isnt necessary for me.

Hey thanks for the responses guys. I think I will get the unlimited card because I’m somewhat unfamiliar with the city and I’m sure I’ll want to see different places. The mass transit system will be my only means of transportation other than walking.

There are two different types of discounted MetroCards available. Buy the “unlimited” weekly or monthly ones only if you’re sure that you’ll be taking at least three rides a day. If not, buy a “regular” $40 card which gives you a discount on the overall base fare.

how much are the unlimited monthy and unlimited weekly cards?

check the MTA site because i don’t know when those rate hikes are going into effect- or if they already have.

i always find it’s best to go with the smallest possible card you need- at first. if you find that hey, you are going other places than just school and home, then you can update.

ohh lord that’s expensive it’s like 80 bucks for the unlimited monthly and 25 for the unlimited weekly.

I’d rather pay as I go. If it’s $2 per ride I don’t see how I could rack up $25 in a week, especially when I first get there.

Actually, it’s $2.25 a ride. Or, rather, it will be. The weekly is almost never worth it, but when I was commuting from Queens, I thought the monthly was definitely worth it. It also ensured that I kept up an active social life!
