I will be transferring to UC Berkeley this Fall and I might room with one of my friends (going to SFSU) in San Francisco. I (we) have not finalized anything. We just talked about it, but I would love to live in S.F. Does anyone know how the AC Transit Transbay "F" Line commute is? How long does it usually take? Is it worth it? etc. If anyone has done this can you share your experience?

I "do not" want to use the Bart because it's $7.30 round trip and would cost me $120-150/month. Thanks

Trust me BART is the best way to get to Berkeley. AC Transit is going to take you a long time to get over there. Also where does your friend live in SF? If he lives near State then BART is the best to use and $7.30 round trip is cheap.

PS I’ve never rode AC F line to CAL. I’ve only taken Bart and that is still like a half hour ride.

I commuted from Berkeley to my job in SF and hardly ever took BART. Since I came into SF in the morning, I took the FS or E bus over, then took the F back to campus for afternoon classes. I cannot stand the F, it can feel as though it takes for-e-ver, but on the other hand, I got a lot of reading done sitting on the bus for 45-60 minutes.

I have to say that on afternoons when I took the E back to Berkeley it was at least 15 minutes faster than taking BART, even with the transfer to the 51 or 7 at College and Claremont. Only the F bus runs all day, but check times for the FS and E - you might find one running in the morning to take you over to the East Bay.

I decided to move back to SF for my final year at Cal so I’ll be commuting from SF to Berkeley, too. Since I’m still cheap, I plan to take the F to and from Berkeley as often as possible. Muni Fast Pass ($55/month) gives unlimited rides within SF on Muni and BART, so you might want to buy one each month to get to around town.
