I have seen many students on here talk about living on campus, but does anyone else plan to commute to UCLA? Since my parents make too much money, I do not qualify for financial aid even though I pay for my schooling myself. Therefore, I am going to have to continue living at home and either try to get a parking pass and drive or take the orange line from the San Fernando Valley. Anyone else in this boat or are all of you going to be partying it up on campus? lol :-)

I will be commuting from Calabasas. No financial aid here either. :)

I'm going to be commuting next year. You should check out the vanpool program if you don't want to do the driving yourself. I think that's what i plan to do since gas is so expensive and it's really hard to get a parking pass.

Here's the link to vanpool
Vanpool Map

i know someone who transfered last year and is dorming this year but doesn't get along well with their roommate so their going to be commuting from el monte in the fall.

See I was considering the vanpool program, but the hours are not very flexible. The vanpool I would take would be the woodland hills one which meets at 6:30 in the morning and leaves at 4:30 in the afternoon. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I don't want to get up that early everyday. lol I was thinking that the orange line would allow me to come and go as I please, but who knows? I haven't really made up my mind yet. All I know is, I am certainly not going to drive because between the high prices of gas and the awful 405 freeway, I will go crazy. :)

I commuted form Tarzana to UCLA when i went there.

I WISH SOMEONE WOULD HAVE KILLED ME INSTEAD

It took me over an hour to drive that 10 miles. I lived 3 lights from the high way entrance so it was not like surface streets took a long time. I hated it soo much. And the orange line would have taken an hour + no matter what because i had to transfer, but then again i am not from there so maybe i read the bus info wrong but i am pretty sure it was two buses not one.

Having said all that, i commuted by choice- i wanted to live in my own place not on campus and i couldnt afford anything around ucla.

Really? That sucks. Your post kinda depressed me. Well since I obviously have no financial means of living in westwood, I figured that taking the orange line would be the lesser of the two evils since I could at least study and do homework instead of sitting in my car trying not to have road rage. From what I have seen, the length of commute is usually around 45 min. on up, which is shorter than having to drive it and then try to find a parking spot. Were you able to get a parking pass and actually find a place to park?

I only got a parking permit twice. Other times i had to pay 8 dollars / day to park.

I had to go to work in beverly hills after school so i had to take my car, i came home really late sometimes i did not feel comfortable taking the bus so late , plus i had to do stuff like grocery shopping etc. So for me i had to go by car

Depending on where you want to park and WHEN you get there you may or may not have a hard time finding a space.

If you get there even like 15 min later than planned all the spaces may be full. I usually tried to get there 45 min b4 class but depending on the days and times of my class, you sort of figure it out as you go when it is busy and when it is not.

I had class at 8 and there was no way i was doing any homework on the bus at 6 am or whatever.

Depending on how often you plan on having class it might be worth it to drive.
Like if it is only twice a week, just drive it but that is 16 bucks for parking plus gas

If you dont get a parking permit for fall, check out craigslist you might be able to get one there, BUT they go for 3x as much oftentimes because people who have money and cars on campus need a place to park those cars and are willing to pay upwards of 500/quarter for the permit. Permits are 187 ( this might have changed cost wise)

Gotcha. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking the bus late either. :)

Well hopefully I can schedule my classes so I only have to go like 2 days a week, but I know a lot of courses have a discussion component which is an extra day. I already know I am not going to make it to an 8am class, so I guess I will just have to wait and see what times the classes are listed. Ideally I would like to take late morning/early afternoon classes, but I'm sure parking will just be worse during those times. Are there any parking structures that are less crowded than others or are all of them awful? Thanks for the tips!

Well i didnt check out all the structures.

If you are North Campus you really are not going to want to park in South Campus and trek up there - atleast not in the early AM- you know just not in the mood that early.

I parked in structures 4,5,3 - i had classes in both parts of campus .

structure 3 was pretty good for me , i didnt have many problems parking there at most times of the day.

Depending on your major you may not have options other than 8 am classes.

structure 5 is located in a nice place but doesnt have a lot of parking. 4 is sort of the same because a lot of visitors park there.

Anyone know if the vanpool runs over the summer as well?

if i go to UCLA, i'll be commuting from the SFV as well...and driving through westwood is like plotting my own demise.

lol I know. At least I know I'm not alone. I might try driving and see how it is but it looks like it's gonna be one big crapshoot trying to navigate around there.

malishka...thanks for the tips. :) I am actually an English major so it looks like most of my classes are going to be in the North Campus area (from what I have seen).

I will seriously never make an 8am class so I will do my best to avoid it at all costs. My community college is only like 10-15 min. away from my house and I still never make my 8am class on time.

I don't really have anything to add other than to say that 8am classes are the work of the devil.

My first quarter the ONLY way my schedule worked because of the EVIL math department was to have 8 am classes and 8am discussions

there was only two sections of the 3 classes i needed to take . It sucked.

20mi away + 405 north + morning classes = f***!!

I know someone who commuted from San Diego. Anything is possible. It helps to know someone where you can crash if things get late, or where you can spend the night in advance of an early test.

They commuted from San Diego?! That's crazy talk right there. Your friend must have spent a fortune on gas. Now I don't feel so bad. :)

P.S. I agree...8am classes are the work of the devil.

Umm i am going to be commuting form San Diego for 1 quarter to finish my degree. Crap i didnt even consider gas prices lol. Ohh well. no choice in the matter, parents live in SD and i live in NYC w/hubby so no way are we going to rent out a place in LA on top of all other expenses.

if only i had teleportation power like the movie jumper
