Hi, I’m looking to become a software engineer. Is this doable majoring in computer engineering at Pitt? I’d rather be in Swanson than Dietrich. Also, if I want to work at a big tech company, do Pitt students have to worry about getting beat out by local CMU kids for the best jobs/internships?
I’ve got a DD who is a junior in CE at Pitt. She has been able to get an internship for the last 2 years and has one set up for this summer. I will admit, the internship after freshman year was due to her dad’s contacts. Last summer she worked for a large bank with both CMU, Pitt and other schools represented. She did get past the Google technical interviews but did not get project matched for this summer. She will be working for IBM this summer in Austin and IBM is providing housing. There seems to be lots of opportunity if you do well, apply yourself and take advantage of all opportunities.
Last summer, while working 40 hrs/wk for the bank, she did an unpaid gig with Google where they supplied a mentor and she developed an app with 3 other students from around the country that they presented at Google in Mountain View in Aug. Again, pursue all opportunities. CMU has bright students but that has not effected my DD. All of her friends also seem to have internships and coops.
Interesting. Thanks for the input! If you don’t mind me asking, is your daughter doing more hardware-oriented internships or is she doing software engineering-type internships/gigs?
Her first internship was working for a small startup and it was hardware - developing a tough tablet. Last summer’s internship was totally software for both the bank and Google. I do believe this summers internship with IBM will also be more software based. She has decided she prefers software to hardware. She did prefer being in the engineering dept. vs natural sciences at Pitt because of the decreased number of GE requirements.
I see. Thanks again. Will definitely be considering Pitt.
