Comp. Sci. --> grad school

Hey, guys ...

Do you know any Computer Science majors who attended UCSD and went on to grad school somewhere else? Which programs did they get into?

I plan on getting a Master's in Comp. Sci., and I'm wondering whether UCSD graduates go on to highly-regarded programs such as Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, etc.

I know that Comp. Sci. at UCSD is respectable. But I just looked at a list of students that currently attend Stanford's Master's program, and all these kids are from places like Cambridge and Ivy League schools. Seriously. It has me a bit concerned.

I too would like an answer to this. My goal in life is to get into Berkeley for grad school for CS (well actually it was my goal to get in for undergrad but that didn’t turn out well) and it’s very highly regarded.

Yes, UCSD students can and do get into “prestigious,” highly regarded CS programs at Stanford, CMU, Berkeley, etc. I know of one guy who went to Stanford for his MS, did well, and came back to UCSD to get his PhD. I think I read of a girl who went to Stanford from SD too. It’s not like I’ve really networked with alumni or gossip about this stuff, so the fact that even someone out of the loop like me (taken CSE classes but am not a major) knows of people who’ve gotten into those programs, should tell you it is possible if uncommon.

Regardless of what school you’re from, you will need a 3.8+ GPA to even be considered competitive for such schools (assuming you have some activities outside of the classroom as well). This is true whether you get a 3.8+ at Cal, CMU or UCSD. I can only imagine them weighing a lower GPA substantially more if you went to freakin Caltech or something. So you with a 3.8+ at UCSD has more or less as good a shot as someone with that gpa from say, Berkeley.
