Was accepted early action to the Honors College at UMD, but was not a direct admit to the engineering program. Time is ticking and I’m starting to weigh my options. I have visited campus once, but the tour was cut short by weather-related issues. I am headed back to College Park in April to check it out again. In the meantime, could anyone please give me some insight on where UMD stands among these other schools? Interested in hearing about engineering program, rankings, honors programs, area surrounding campus, social life, alumni network, etc. Thanks!
U of Florida – accepted into Engineering (waiting to hear about Honors Program)
Virginia Tech – accepted into Engineering program
Hi. VaTech was a top contender for my senior d several months ago. We’ve visited both Maryland and VaTech. She got into both. VaTech has a beautiful campus but for her, it would be hard to travel to (we live in the midwest) and when we visited twice there seem to be no engineers around (seriously, maybe they were in the library or rooms working?). There is also not much to do nearby besides the great outdoors. Additionally, their honors program was not presented well and we got the sense that their honors community didn’t seem active or cohesive. However, on the plus side, I’ve been told that kids stay on campus since it’s isolated and far from the more populated parts of the state.
We had a very chilly tour at UMD and it didn’t cover engineering. So my d did not get a good, full read. Another perk for UMD, is the amount of industry in that part of the country including NASA right there.
Can’t comment on FL- no data. Feel free to send a PM if you’d like. Hang in there with these last few weeks before decisions are due.
