Compared to Classmates or the WHOLE applicant pool

Hi-
Ok, so one of the reasons why I am really nervous about NYU is the fact that there are 2 (possibly 3) more qualified people than me applying ED from my school. Do we get compared to the people we go to school with, or do we get compared to the whole applicant pool? Meaning... will the fact that they also applied hurt my chances of getting in??

I think that people applying from your school is a pretty big factor.

I go to a public magnet for example, and 101 students applied last year, 43 were accepted, and 17 enrolled. Obviously this is higher than the national acceptance rate, but the people that were rejected had stats that were well above the average accepted at NYU.

bryan, i called nyu today and they told me there is no way you will get in. sorry

just kidding, but didn't that freak you out

just a bit, marc, just a bit. I kinda deserved it though.

You do compete against your own classmates. Great story from the book, "The Price of Admissions":

A certain US senator's son applied to Princeton with less than mediocre grades and he had already been kicked out of one prep school. But the senator is very wealthy and an alum. So he had given about 100 million to the school and now the student center bears his name. When they accepted the son, they accepted every kid from his prep school who had applied to Princeton with better stats so no one could accuse them of anything inappropriate.

I think there may be competition with classmates.
