Hey, I'm looking for a little bit of help in deciding between my colleges. So far, ive narrowed it down to 4 and im nearly 100% certain I want to become a physician in the future. I live in the northeast (used to weather) and plan to stay fairly close to home.

1) Syracuse University- Probably my top choice because of very solid academics, great sports, and great college experience. However, it might not be the in the best city and any insights on nightlife?

2) RPI- Again great academics and opportunities. But I've heard nasty things about Troy, the school has a 3:1 guy:girl ratio, and people seem to be divulged in school work (which I don't mind).

3) Northeastern- In Boston! Beautiful campus, great apartments, great nightlife. I'm only hesitant on its academics because of the whole co-op thing and my parents have only gotten criticism about the school (They seem to hate it). I also hear its not very reputable right now.

4) George Washington University- Well, I didn't get any money here but im still considering it. Its a bit far away for me, but I've heard its a terrific school overall.

Any comments and opinions on these 4 schools would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Have you visited all of the schools? I don’t recommend choosing a school that you haven’t visited. Here’s my opinion. It doesn’t sound like you want to go to RPI. The school you choose will be your home for the next four years, so you should pick somewhere you want to live. As a pre-med, you will need to get high grades in your science classes. I think this might be more difficult will all the engineering types at RPI. I think Syracuse would probably be the easiest school in terms of grades.

I don’t think Northeastern makes sense for a pre-med. You don’t really need the co-op and it will take longer to graduate. That narrows things down to Syracuse or GW. I have visited both. I have visited both, and like GW better. I think the academics will be stronger. DC is much more appealing than Syracuse. However, you won’t find the same sports excitement. In terms of distance, you can fly to DC from almost anywhere.

If you were my kid, I’d take you to visit Syracuse and GW and then pick one of them. Good luck. You have great choices.

Re: Northeastern premed:
[Tufts Medical School Early Assurance Program](http://www.premed.neu.edu/applying/tufts_ea_program/)
But since you refer to “the whole coop thing” in those words, I think you missed the point of that program. Why would working coop at Harvard Med School or Brigham & Women’s Hospital hurt your academic experience? Why do your parents hate Northeastern? Ask them for a reason.
You seem to be getting a lot of bad advice re: Northeastern.

Thanks for the insight momjr, i plan on visiting the schools this month.

and tom-I do understand co-op, but I really don’t wanna graduate in 5 years because im already going to do 4 more years of grad school. And if i do graduate in 4 years at northeastern, how much respect does a degree at this school give me when applying to med schools (given same gpa, MCATs, etc)?

A Northeastern degree will give you as much respect as any of the other schools you list, none of which would be categorized as elite. GPA and MCAT being the same, med school admission comes down to you. The Tufts early acceptance program at Northeastern requires a 3.5 GPA with no MCAT required. If you get less than a 3.5 at any university, med school admission chances aren’t that good.
