Comparing FA Duke to Harvard : you'll be suprised

Fafsa EFC 13k
Duke EFC 14.1k includes 3.7k loans and work study
Harvard EFC 11.5k includes .6k loans and work study

My child wants to go to Duke. Is it appropriate to ask Duke to match the Harvard offer? If so how can this be accomplished tactfully?

there is a thread in scholarship section. you may get some pointers there.

of course it is appropriate to ask. duke and harvard offer look similar though.

My D received better FA from American than from Amherst. The Pres of Amherst called, and I told her to tell him flat out what the offer of American was, and she did. He told her that if her final decision was based on $ to give him a call. They had the $. Tact has nothing to do with it - it's negotiations. No rudeness, just honesty. Negotiating is normal in these situations.

Just ask them straight up for a financial review. Let them know that Duke is your first choice, but Harvard is the most financially feasible option for your family. Duke will most likely match.

Don't for get to aks about how this will be treated in subsequent years, because they may meet the Harvard package first year but it does not mean that you won't see a similar Dule package in the future.

It's April. The "need-blind" bubble bursts, the hot air dissipates, and now it's all about "merit" - who they want, who they can grab from the competition, how much they want you, what the "merit" of your negotiation skills are.

It's amazing how you can look poorer in April (of course, come September, most folks actually will be. ;))
