Comparing Seattle Area Computer Science Programs

I am a Running Start student. I was not selected for Direct Admission to UW CSE. My GPA is 3.75, SAT 2150. I still need to complete Math 126 and CSE 143, but other prerequisites are done. I have 115 community college credits and have been told I'll need to meet with a general adviser every quarter at UW Seattle to discuss alternate majors and plans. I am interested in a dual major in Computer Science and Math and a minor in Japanese. I have looked into other schools and found UW Tacoma. There, I can major in Computer Science and minor in Math but they have no Japanese. I have also visited WSU Vancouver where I can do Computer Science but they offer no minors in Math or Japanese. Saint Martin's University has all 3 departments and options. Perhaps I am a reluctant risk taker, but starting my education at UW Seattle needing to discuss alternate options after the first quarter is not how I envisioned college. Could anyone give me advice about what my choices might mean for future job and learning opportunities? Thank you.

Meeting with an adviser isn’t a big deal, and it seems like they only want you to do it because you have so many credits and are applying for CSE. Regardless I think you have a fair shot at CSE.

Off topic, but did they let you know that all of your credits might not transfer?

[Transfer Credit Policies | University of Washington](http://admit.washington.edu/Admission/Transfer/CreditPolicies#restrictions)
The University allows a maximum of 90 credits of lower-division transfer coursework to be applied toward a UW degree. Of the 180 credits required for graduation from the University (some majors require more than 180), a maximum of 90 lower-division transfer credits are allowed. Once you are enrolled at the UW, if your lower-division credit exceeds 90, there will be a difference between the “total credits earned” and the “total credits allowed” under the Summary of Transfer Credit following the Detail of Transfer Credit.

All community college classes are lower division and most transfer as such. (However my nutrition class transferred to a 300 level…but that’s rare, you might want to look at how your classes will transfer to UW and count up how many credits are 100-200 level. If you took anything like Math 098 or lower that won’t count at all toward graduation credits or part of the gpa when they figure out your transferable gpa

I’m not sure if the other colleges you mentioned have similar policies or not. But if you don’t want to lose credits you earned, you might want to take a look at both how many of those credits will transfer to uw vs other schools (or if you care if you lose some credits)

Yes. The CSE adviser told me 90 would be attached to my record but if they need to pull from the rest as prerequisites, they just sit there not added in. Anyway, after fall quarter I’ll be at 105 and that is the point where holds get placed on registration until meeting with an adviser to talk about plans to major. I am just afraid I’ll get stuck having to major in something I don’t really want as much as computer science. Thanks for your input.
