Univ of Maryland
Pitt
Univ of Vermont
Univ of Wisconsin
I know the rankings and stats, and lets assume OOS with comparable cost for each. So would a kid who is undecided in major (but leans toward Bio and Health) be crazy to say screw the rankings and choose UVM or Pitt over Maryland or Wisconsin? How would you rank these schools for yourself or your kid? Pros and cons? Return on investment is a factor…
You could be in running for big merit at UVM and barely in at Maryland. Choosing UVM or Pitt for merit, honors, access to health related majors is rational. Depends on goals and personal preferences for environment.
Assuming comparable cost and bio or health majors I would probably rank UW and Pitt highest…but really for those majors I see all four schools in the same general ballpark.
Highest ROIs are more by major, not by school attended…and bio is not a high ROI ug major…grad school will most likely be required, is that in the budget? Not sure what type of ‘health’ major you mean, but grad school is likely in the future for majors such as public health and policy, health sciences, healthcare administration, etc.
I wouldn’t go to a large OOS flagship for bio since ROI is so low, unless honors college were offered.
So, my pick would be the cheapest honors college offer.
Amongst ALL the universities in the country, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is among the best choice for a life science major. ‘bio’ majors from Madison are well-prepared for careers in in the pharmaceutical industry, agricultural industry, nutritional sciences, pharmacy, medicine, for example.
