Comparing Students

I have heard that if you and some other people in your class want to go to the same college the college decides how many people they want to take from that school and they put you up against your classmates and compare grades and such to decide who to accept.

Anyone know anything about this? Can anyone extend on this statement?

Depends. Some schools, like Dartmouth and a lot of the top LACs claim that they will theoretically take an entire class from one high school if that is the source of the most qualified applicants for the year. Of course, that will never happen, but some schools don't take it into consideration, others do.
