Comparing The Colleges

SO like some others I
m guessing, I was given the opportunity to switch to Warren from Sixth. I
m probably gonna try and call them to see if I can switch to ERC instead, but I was wondering if anyone can offer some comparisons between Sixth, Warren, & Eleanor Roosevelt [+ the rest] especially regarding

-GE`s
-dorms
-the people/environment as a whole

I dunno if there
s another thread on this, but I
d appreciate any help. GOGOGO Thankyou =)

ERC has a lot of GEs (especially writing) and the dorms in my opinion are probably the nicest.

Warren dorms are pretty nice too.

I heard that the Sixth dorms were the oldest ones. (Not sure if its true or not)

Are Revelle dorms the oldest?

Warren has the least amount of GE's, but Muirs' are the easiest.

I already sent in my acceptance of ERC's offer from Sixth...I don't care about the writing---honestly ERC is the BEST college at UCSD in my opinion...it's so nice and the theme is basically what I'm all about...ugh I'm so excited...

lecorbeau, you think we will get a guaranteed housing if we switch to another college? I already sent in my acceptance to Warren, but I am just a little worried about the housing. Also, are they going to consider us after we sent in our interest or we are in our respective colleges for sure?

Yeah I had the same question. I'm sure as soon as they change our TritonLink page a new Housing App. will show up and we'll have to reapply (regardless of the deadline)

We're agreeing to CONVENIENCE them...they would have to let us know that we were forfeiting our guaranteed housing in a request to help THEM out...

sixth dorms definitly shoudlnt' be the oldest ones--isn't sixth the newest college?

Yes, but as the newest college they get the "passaround" dorms that every new college has to use to begin with...

does anyone know anything about revelle dorms?
pictures would be nice

well I think marshall and ERC are the closest to the beach.....if that helps

i thought warren and roosevelt housing looked and felt the best -- but this housing is kinda removed, while muir and revelle seem to be integrated into the heart of campus -- but these two colleges are the older ones, so their dorms are also older than in other colleges

i lived in muir and only visited friends at the above mentioned colleges -- so i dunno, may be it is different if you live there -- muir had these grey walls and icky carpet -- just didn't feel cozy at all -- revelle seemed cramped, narrow passageways, and the ceiling looked kinda low -- but may be i was just getting claustrophobic when i was there because some people liked those dorms -- muir apartments were nice although compared to the dorms

muir housing was also kinda nice in that if you get to live on the top floors of tioga and tenaya, may be you'll get the ocean view -- or your study lounge may face it which is kinda nice

living in muir and revelle also has the benefit of many of the lecture halls being close by -- only Warren lecture hall and Literature building are kinda distant but H&SS, York, Peterson, AP&M, NSB, Mandeville, and even Center are close buy which are common locations to have lectures in social sciences and humanities, chemistry and biology labs, sections in physics and math, history lectures -- Warren hall is where you take physics labs, some discussion sections and lectures, and Literature building is used for language courses -- between muir and revelle there is also the old student center (where you can buy some more diverse food than cafeterias can offer as well as lecture notes, bike parts, and a few other things), main gym, some tennis and basketball courts -- but then roosevelt has RIMAC which is way nicer than main gym -- revelle also has CLICS which is a popular place to study/socialize

a word of caution to everyone coming to live on campus -- please KEEP YOU STUFF LOCKED -- i don't know what it is with some people, but there are individuals who enjoy stealing stuff -- don't assume that everyone is harmless and friendly and won't bother with your things -- there have been cases ranging from two laptops being stolen at the same time from the same suite to homeless guys having showers in your bathroom very early in the morning if you don't lock your suites

How about the GE`s between Warren and Sixth ? Both require about 17 quarters, but I was wondering what the "Program of Concentration" thing is for Warren. How does that work and what can we choose from...does it basically turn into a minor ? And also, how do people from Warren differ from people at Sixth outgoing-ness and personality wise ?

The Program of Concentration is basically asking for you to practically do a minor in something not directly tied to your current major. For those who want to major-minor or double major, Warren is the best.

Program of Concentration for Warren

"Two Programs of Concentration (PofCs) are required. Each must contain six, 4-unit courses (total of 24 units), at least three of which must be upper-division (courses numbered 100-199). Lower-division courses in PofCs may overlap with lower-division major courses. NO overlap is allowed in the upper-division courses. Note: Your PofCs must be non-contiguous to your major and non-contiguous to each other.

Students pursuing B.S. majors in Biology, Chemistry, Cognitive Science, Earth Sciences, Management Science, Physics, and Psychology are required to complete two PofCs."

^ I took that from the Warren College website

Minor (Warren) - "Departmental minor may be used in lieu of a Program of Concentration or area study if the minor is noncontiguous to the minor"

Minor (Sixth) - "Optional"

^ I got the minor thing from this booklet that talks about each of the colleges.

my sister told me that having a minor unrelated to your major is one more added boost for graduate school admissions. (her major is bio and her minor is geography)

Thanks, all this is helping. I`m still not completely sure what I wanna do. Warren will be good for me because I was planning on double majoring in another field, which is non-contiguous to my current major. My one dilemma is being able to minor in international relations [my other consideration] because it is the same category of my major [management science] regarding the PofC stuff.

The one thing only holding me back is the people. I don`t know how the people are at Warren because I never visited the college. I visited Sixth during Admit day so I got a better feel for it. Is there anyone who can give their opinions/knowledge between the two colleges regarding the social/people aspect ? Any help would be much appreciated seeing as I have to submit my reply in two days... =)

How would you guys rank the colleges socially??? I've always hear that Muir is the most social....Is this true??

i heard that too

The only people Ive heard that from is people on here that dont, and have never, actually attended the school. Who cares which is the most social. If you're social, you'll obviously find people to talk to. If you're not, you can have fun by yourself. 0;]
