Just wondering how you guys that have taken it/heard about it would compare it to highschool chem. What grades did you guys get in it? How hard was it really? But what im really looking for is its comparison to highschool chem courses.
Thanks.

Comparing it to AP Chem class in high school? Exactly the same except Chem 142 goes faster through the material and is less lenient on exams/grades in general. Average GPA is automatically set to about 2.7. Comparing it to regular Chem class in high school? Chem 142 basically runs through the entire regular Chem class in a week or two.

Chem 142 is a 3 month course that covers everything learned from high school chemistry in more depth. So, pace is definitely fast and you really have to absorb what you learn before moving on so if 3 months sounds to short to learn what was learned in high school (plus a few more concepts), I suggest you really think about it. Good luck!

man average grade is 2.7??? Seems so low! haha. well ive taken two years of chem now, honors chem, and advanced chem (our school doesnt offer ap chem, else i would’ve taken it) and i have a STRONG love for chem. I’m also just self studying for the ap chem test, and most of the stuff that’s in the PR review book i already know, but anyway. You really think that i’d get a 2.7 in there? After having 2 years of chem already, and earning A’s in both.

how you do in high school chem isn’t a very good indicator of how you’ll do in chem in college. I know some people who have never taken high school chem who got high 3s and did better than some people who got As in high school chem. Also, 2.7 is only the average. You sound like you could do well, but it depends how much effort you put in

^what he/she said.

If you get a 4+ on the AP Chem test I believe you can get credit for 142. Chem 142 isn’t too bad, especially if you like chem. I hate Chem with a passion (never will I take another chem course) and I still managed to do very well in the course. I averaged like a 80-85% overall grade and got a 3.8.

highlyhighlyhighly depends on your teacher… not that the material is any different, but certain teachers tests are easier than others

If professor matters to such an extent… maybe you should reconsider…
Regardless of which professor you have, you should do well independently if aiming to get into med school.

I’m not aiming for med school? But all I’m saying is some professors classes are easier than others. I won’t say teacher names… but I took a friends midterm to practice for mine and got a A… took anothers and did not nearly as well.
Just depends. Material itself is doable though.

Advanced chem at BHS is great prep for intro college chem. UW uses Zumdahl for the 142 and 144 series, so that should give you an idea of the material covered. If you’ve done well in high school chem, the 142 series shouldn’t be much of a problem (general consensus from what I’ve heard). One important difference from high school chem is that the labs consume a lot more time and effort.

bothellcougar-you shouldn’t have to worry about getting a 2.7 with your track record in BHS chem. Hitting the top of the curve is definitely doable.
