My daughter got accepted to both schools. UConn is in state tuition (20,000)and Syracuse normal tuition (54,000). She is undecided major at both schools. she Has no idea what she wants to do. If she goes to uconn i can afford to pay for graduate school, if she choses syracuse she is on her own for future education. I am trying to find out rankings for schools and find they are skewed towards who ever wrote them. Where can I compare and make a intelligent decision. I know it should be based on academics and job security after graduation. What would you do?

Actually, the decision doesn’t have to be based on the two factors you mentioned. Students – and families – make decisions about colleges based on many things. And I don’t know that there is all that much difference in terms of academics and jobs – except for students in one of Syracuse’s very well known specialty programs, such as communications.

It sounds as though you could leave this decision to your daughter, as long as she understands what it means in terms of family contributions to possible graduate education.

Has she visited both campuses? Also, has she talked to students who attend either school (if you’re in-state, she probably knows people at UConn, at least)? The information she obtains in this way could help with her decision.

I think the cost differential makes this one a no-brainer (perhaps $100k or more over 4 years?). The schools are not far apart in their rankings, both big northeast schools with lots of school spirit. I say Go Huskies!

CT resident, Syracuse grad

Differences:

1) Money
2) Syracuse plays zone, U Conn plays man-to-man

1 matters #2 doesn’t

IMHO this isn’t really a question; we’re not talking about the difference between private and out of state public - a $40 to $60K decision - we’re talking about a $100+K decision. Unless Syracuse comes up with big financial aid, there’s no comparison.

FWIW we have many friends with students at U Conn and all are happy with their choices.

Speihei. Thought it was going to be a basketball question! UConn grad here. The difference is cost would definitely tip me to UConn particularly since she is an undecided major. The difference for four years is 136 thousand dollars!

I agree with prior posters. For some students there may be compelling reasons to choose Syracuse over UConn, that doesn’t appear to be the case for the OP’s D.
