Comparison

Can anybody who has been accepted give me an idea of how well I stand in the chance of being accepted? I am a sophmore with about a 97 overall average in school. I am ahead of the rest of my class in math and I will be ahead in science next year. I participate in an academic challenge club and student council. I play varsity golf and I also played one year of jv baseball. I am planning on next year playing golf and basketball and maybe tennis for the school. Out of school I participate in Civil Air Patrol and am a Cadet Senior Airman, and I think that I will get a leadership position in the near future. I also volunteer at my church and at the local Warplane museum. As of today I have about 70-80 hours of work in those places combined. I am very physically fit and I expect to score well on the physical fitness test. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

SAT/ACT scores count a lot. Try for upper 600's or better.

Yeah, definitely prep for the SAT's as much as possible to give yourself a better shot at higher scores. Also, if you already have any leadership positions in the sports you play, you should shoot for those too. Basically, just keep up the good work, and you'll have a great shot.

I took the PSAT and without studying I got a 61 on the critical reading, 63 on the math, and 59 on the writing. I expect that I will study a lot more for the SAT and take it many times.

Some people may not realize that just adding a zero to your PSAT score will give you an equivalent SAT score. Sounds like you're making a good start! Also, USAFA looks harder at the Math score.

I agree that it looks like you have a great start. Keep your grades up, take the toughest classes available at your school, prep for both the SAT and ACT then take both exams, and next year you should apply to the summer program. Remember that no one here is really "official" and can't truly evaluate your candidacy. You may also want to reach out to your local Admissions representative in order to get the official information.

Thanks for your help.

You should also get in touch with your Member of Congress and get application package to see what's in it and also chat with the staff person to find out how competitive your district is for AFA.

Congressional elections this November mean your congressperson could change. Mine was just electedlast election, she beat a guy who had the seat for ages... just keep that in mind.

Our son got one of our MCs last nominations in November of her defeat. But asking for info and getting the lay of the land for competitiveness is inforamational. Usually MCs have an advisory board to review all the applications and it is frequently non-political. I won't say always, but usually.

Those SATs/ACTs are pretty big...just don't obsess over them. To be honest, your activities sound better than mine. I am attending USAFA this year (soon to be class of '10). So, I would say keep up the good work.

On the CAP side...you should try to at least go to a summer encampment and promote as much as possible. Try to get as involved in your Wing as you can. If they have NCO schools go to them. Volunteer for jobs at the cadet competition, SAR events, or anything else that comes up.

I think that I will be going to the 2006 NY Wing encampment and I am a SSG now, expecting another promotion in the next month.

Get at least your Mitchell...if you can go higher than that then the better off you are. Besides, doing well in CAP leads to other awesome things in CAP--COS, IACE, CLA, to name a few. I've really gotten a lot out of the program besides its resume-building quality. But, as always, you get out of it what you put into it. Good luck!
