I'm very interested in NU, particularly Medill, but I wanted to know how academically competitive the students are at NU. Any input is helpful! thanks!

Someone please help me out!!

Not very....

It does depend on your major to some extent, but I found NU to be pleasantly laid-back. Do people work their butts of here? Yes. Do we stress about grades/midterms? Yes. But I've found that it is largely a question of individual competition (pushing oneself to acheive), rather than students competing with one another and stabbing each other in the back. Medill is tough (have you heard tell of the "Medill F" yet?), but again, most students I've met in the school are usually friendly, fun, and not too nuts over "beating everybody".

This is actually one of the reasons I didn't apply to the Harvards or Yales...I didn't want a cutthroat atmosphere, I just wanted to soak up as much information and experience as I could in 4 years. And so far it's been wonderful. :)

thanks so much, and yes, i've heard of the Medill F- Hopefully I won't get one if I get in (cross fingers for both!!!)

Any other opinions? I'm trying to get an idea from a wide variety of people.

what is the Medill F

The Medill F (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong...) is based on Medill's commitment to journalistic integrity. Therefore, one single incorrect fact or misspelled name, and you get an instant F on your report.

I haven't really felt any competition at all. Everybody's really smart here and you'll probably find somebody smarter than you, so it's kinda hard to compete with people who read 4 chapters ahead of you in the book. But they're not the arrogant type either, which is great. Basically, this is the perfect academic atmosphere - tough work, barely any competition, great resources...
