Competition for 2011

I love Invictus.

I'm leaning towards applying MIT early action, depending on how I do the remainder of this year.

As more and more kids learn the "lottery ticket theory of elite school admissions," admissions will dramatically INCREASE. Next year will be much worse than this year!

I'm really excited to start the process but also nervous....my school isn't very competitive, but it seems that everyone else's here is. I'm in CA but I intend to go somewhere in NY or MA.

I'm super excited/nervous to start the cycle. I'm definitely applying Princeton ED after I just visited (it was amazing) and UMich rolling, then probably 10 more schools after that...kinda need to pick those ten though :). I'm excited about the whole process but I'm really nervous that next year all of my APs, ECs, job, and apps will be a lot....just gotta buckle down.....

jtc007, which schools are you applying to?

Hey... more people, higher percentage of academically smart people in the group... the harder it will be...

I predict that '11 won't be any better than '10.. but not too much worse.

Like many, I'm simply a good student with good test scores & a few deep interests here and there who has no idea where he will be going, :p!

WHEEEEEEE!!! College admissions, almighty stressors!!!!!

For some reason... it's kind of fun revealing college strategies on CC...

Round 1

U-Michigan & SUNY Stonybrook(Rolling) (Hey! I can apply as early as September!!)

Three Possible Early Strategies
1.) MIT (TOP Choice), U of Chicago, and Notre Dame (EA)... All are in my Top Ten.
MIT RD, I have heard, is easier than MIT EA.... and would be happy at Chicago & ND... but #1 could screw me out at #2 & #3.

2.) Princeton ED (Another TOP Choice... pretty much aware that ED is my only chance at Princeton... visited the school and loved it!)

3.) Duke ED (Another TOP Choice... I know ED is easier than RD, but Duke RD, at least seems like a possiblity... like Princeton, visited the school and loved it!)

Round 2

About another ten schools... Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and U-Penn are some other schools I have plenty of interest in...

Let the fun & anxiety commence!

the number of students applying to college is growing exponentially

everyone should be ready with a safety school

Let the backstabbing, bloodletting, dog-eating-dog, cat-eating-cat, bleeding, and throat-slitting begin.

There.

well said

to the armory!

I hope it's not as.... cut throat.

I'm applying to Upenn, NYU, Wesleyan, Bowdoin, American, St. Olaf, UM-Twin Cities
Maybe: Tufts, Hamilton, Yale, Amherst

BingCold: Here's the current list:

Princeton ED
Dartmouth
Cornell
Northwestern
Penn
UMich Rolling
Boston University

I also am visiting and may add Harvard, Yale, Brown, Tufts, and maybe some other schools.

I'm interested to see why you are applying at all Ivies except Princeton.

princeton does not have a med school, which is what i plan to do after undergrad

It does have an excellent molecular biology program though! I can see why you wouldn't want to apply to a school without a med school, but there are ample opportunities at Princeton for pre-meds to get a great education.

thats true, but i'm probably going to be involved in research or some other science ec's during undergrad, and staying in the same school for med school would be advantageous since i'll know the setting/environment

I guess, if that is what you would prefer. Then you should probably apply to PLME at Brown--if you do that you can go all the way through in 7 years and save some money and stress of getting in med school.

Myself, I would rather mix it up for grad school and try another school.

well, staying at same place is also good for residency... as for PLME, i am indeed going to apply for that, along with NU's HPME and WashU's University Scholar programs.

it definitely will be. the chinese have this whole big notion of dragon year babies being lucky. the class of 2011 should be made up mainly of dargon year babies.

So it keeps getting harder and harder, doesn't it ahave to stop somewhere? We're not superhuman.

I agree...its the same thing as NMSF cutoffs: will they be 239 someday? There has to be a "wall" for admissions to hit someday because students are only human.
