Competition for 2011

Well, if you plan on only applying to the same 10 schools that everyone else is applying to (you know, the ones that reject 90% of applicants), then yes, next year will be a bloodbath. But, if you're smart, and cast a wide net that includes some of the many EXCELLENT options out there that everyone else isn't just applying to in lock-step (you know, the ones that accept 40%, 50% and even 60% of applicants), you'll likely be pleased with your results at this time next year. :)

I completely agree . . . too many insensitive people here, I think what you mentioned constitutes about 40% of the forum, with the other 60% real advice (mostly from parents and kids already in college) and just mere "chatting" (whether it's high schoolers looking forward to the college admissions process or admitted kids anxiousness/congratulations/condolences)

its not unthinkable, its just a cover up method. when your a valedictorian, perfect ec's, 2300 / 2300 sat's and your facing a decent shot or rejection its going to be a tense environment. plus no kids likes being under that type of spotlight.

I'm from VA and I'm planning to apply to Brown ED, and then when I get rejected (XD) will apply to UPenn, Berkeley, UVA, William & Mary, Smith, Wellesley, VATech, and either VCU or GMU.

In California the kids who will be graduating HS classes of 2008 and 2009 were the largest classes EVER and the schools were over-crowded. Kids graduating HS 2010 and after have been in classes with rapidly declining numbers -- the Baby-Boom-Boom stopped then and the schools were crying for students.

Define competitive.... Does this mean that the scores are rising or does it mean that more kids are applying to more schools? I suspect the latter... The only true measurment is if the SAT, SAT IIs, ACTs, APS scores are rising. All other measurements (President of Hawaii Libertarians) or grades are probably driven by other factors.

competitive in this case i think is a very general term that does not need to be defined. it is all together, what it takes to get into college; and since each college has its own criteria of what it wants to see in students, it can't be said. but generally a comprehensive list of such characteristics of a "competitive" student or a competitive collective whole can be found at www.princetonreview.com under any college search.

hmmmm...
so will class of 09/13 have the easiest year of 06-10
cuz if it is...

YAY FOR 2009/20013

my school is like that, too--'04=brilliant/talented, '05=smart, not much spirit, '06=smart, but have been slacking for a while, '07(ME!!)= overachievers/talented/OCD (no joke. we're crazy)

CLASS OF 2007/2011 UNITE!

and I hope to see some of you at X school in two very short years!

(and I personally despise Junior year...grrr I want to go to college NOW)

~Bkstg_Mt~

It's impossible to answer this until the stats come in from the waiting lists. The popular press seems oblivious to the fact while the numbers of applications are up 10%, 20% or more at some schools, the number of applicants is not up by anything close to that. So it's a question of the accuracy of yield predictions.

For International Students (especilly from developing and least developed countires) class of 2011 is going to be yet more difficult. As, the number of colleges that give good aid is limited and very low, while the competition is increasing wildly every year.

supposedly at my school, the competition is less intense this year. last year's class was crazy! what with all the 2400's and whatnot.

Class of 05: 2 people go to MIT
Class of 06: 1 person gets into Harvard
Class of 07: Less competition-top 20 goes from 4.1 to 3.68 or something, and I'm a 3.5 ugh :(

2011 - toughest year =p in the history ever ever ever. don't bother applying anywhere! lol jk jk.

it's not going to get any easier and as someone has already said before =) it's probably going to be the class of extremes. either really in or really out! but tough decisions will have to be made.. ooooooooh.. by the adcoms of course =p not us ;__;

Oh my god! I am so lucky!

HS class of 2009 FTW!

What is that about Harvard and free tuition for students w/ families making under 60K? do any other schools do that?

argh. my school's way different from others.
class of '05 - 7 people get into harvard
class of '06 - 3 or 4 people get into harvard (not quite sure, may have been more) and like a lot of people get into other top20's
class of '07 - just chilllllll. there are less than 10 overachievers. out of 130ish.
and wow, i'm really surprised at how '07s already know where they're going to apply. me, i'm next to clueless.

Don't worry; I don't have much of an idea, but I do know now that I am applying to: UPENN, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Saint Peter's, and possibly Princeton.

I've got to improve a bit to have a decent shot at UPENN though, especially at the Business school.

'07 is going to be cut throat in my school, just look at my stats I'm going to have a 5.6 weighted gpa and my class rank is probably going to be 75/600, everyone thats ahead of me is going to have taken over 15 ap/ib classes

Make UPenn #1 kids.

You can do it.
Its really gaining.
