Competition?

Why do certain schools ask in their application what other schools you are applying to?

(ex. Pepperdine University.)

I am not sure what I should put (as I am applying to very competitive and state schools) and what exactly " they " in general, or Pepperdine specifically is looking for.

Any advice would help!

I'm being very cautious with that question. If it's optional, as it is on some of my applications, I am leaving it blank. The way this can be detrimental is if they think you are using the school as a safety. If I have to say other schools, I'm going to make sure I'm careful with which ones I mention. I would just consider how your other applications might appear to the school. As for how Pepperdine fits in, I can't help you there, that's just what I'm doing.

I was reading about this somewhere around here and there was some speculation that when the evil collegeboard sends scores to a school, it also informs them where else scores where sent.
