Competitive 5k Time

If a male student is looking to be considered as a cross country athletic recruit, what would be considered a competitive 5k time? 16:00?

it depends on what level you’re talking about, but for DI you would have to be a lot faster than that

[How to Get Recruited for College Cross Country - Scholarships | NCSA](http://www.ncsasports.org/recruiting-tools/cross-country/mens-cross-country-recruiting-guidelines)

Best to look at the athletic websites for the schools you’re interested in and then at the rosters for XC and track. They’ll often have pr’s listed for athletes. You want to see what current freshman times look like or look up their high school pr’s on dyestat. That will give you an indication of what kinds of times the schools are expecting from recruits. If you’re in the ballpark, you might contact the coach and ask directly what times he wants to see. Good luck!

Agree with Runners2, but would add not to focus on XC times as courses vary so much (hilly/flat/measured wrong), but look at 1600 and 3200 track times and use them as a basis for comparison. Those times are much more objective.

In the Ivy Outdoor T&F Champs this year, you needed to go sub 15 to place in the top 20 in the 5000m, same in the ACC.

PAC-10 and SEC, sub 14:40 or so for top 20. That’s not to say you need to be there as a freshman, but gives you an idea of the level of competition.

Times required definitely vary depending on the schools you are applying to and based on your background. For example, I am a 17:30 5k runner, 4:58 miler, 15:58 2.77 mile PR. I come from an extremely small private school. We have no track. We have minimal training. Small team. I do most training on my own at home. I’ve made college coaches aware of my situation. Now, I am not exactly getting recruited by SEC schools here but I am being recruited by my own top three schools, (DIII, DII, and a DI, all moderately weak at XC) along with a couple others that are not really on my radar.

I’m basically looking to break 17:10 this year and I will be set. If you’re anywhere near 16:00 right now, you will be too for most colleges.
