Competitive friends

Does anyone else have hyper-competitive friends?

At my school, people will go out of their way to mislead their classmates. Sabotaging projects, offering fake lecture notes, hiding others' homework, being secretive, lying...I could write a book on all the backstabbing, gossip, and secrecy that goes on at my school. Does anyone else have similar experiences?

Your school is full of gunners.

That’s just sad.

That’s insane. I’m really sorry for you, that you have to go to a school where the competition is that cutthroat. At my school, people are all supportive of each other. Everybody shares (legitimate) academic advice and study help with each other, even people they hate.

Wow my school is laid back. I mean too laid back…

Well atleast everyone at my school goes to college (100% rate!)

When I saw this thread I immediately thought of a couple friends of mine and how we keep one another on our toes because of the competitiveness.

Your competition is definitely on a different level than ours… haha

No, luckily I don’t.

That’s unfortunate though.

I’ve never experienced cutthroat backstabbing like this. Frankly, it sounds disgusting.

From an outside perspective, I think your school is really interesting; I wouldn’t mind spending a year there to experience it. That being said, I can still imagine how big of a pain it is to be around those people; I feel for you.

My school is like this: there is a small group of the really smart ones, a slightly larger group of the decent ones, and the rest are just plain stupid. So, as you can imagine, my friends (the really smart ones and some of the decent ones) don’t backstab each other, and the really stupid ones couldn’t possibly care less about school.

My school is a lot like yours, unfortunately and it sucks, especially because a few of my friends will (and do) go out of their to sabotage you in any way possible.

Junior year was somewhat of a hell for me in that sense. I remember one of my friends ( now we don’t talk much) literally stole my other friend’s project so she would receive a zero as her grade. (And unfortunately, she did)

And then there was this other time, where one of the girls in my class decided to be a badass and fool the teacher into thinking no one handed their project because the class wanted to trick the teacher. So, she ends up being the good one handing it in, after class. The next day, the teacher takes off 50% from everyone’s grade for “deceiving her”.

No, we don’t have class rank.

wow, and I thought my school was bad…

Dude, that’s awful. Is your school a top 10 private school or something? I can’t imagine what could make kids that bad…

i imagine med school could be like that too

^Haha, it is from what I’ve heard. Especially in the third year.

Yep. You always have to be on-guard. Although it’s not for class rank since our school eliminated that due to the “hihgly competitive nature”. But most people do want to one-up everyone else.

I used to have an ultra-competitive friend. She tried not to make it obvious, but she always made my accomplishments seem unimportance and if I was told to be good at something, she almost always decided she was better at it. Once when I got a higher score than her, she argued with the teacher. Then her score was raised. It wasn’t even the highest score, but she was pretty satisfied. It sucked.

You mean people who want to be Doctors or Investment Bankers? Yeah, my school has a lot of them.

Yeah, it’s pathetic that a lot of people are willing to go great lengths to bring down their classmates. My school is actually not ranked within the top 100 by US News. We just have a repulsively competitive culture to achieve and outdo others :(

Have any of you ever felt that competitive? I used to be like that, but eversince high school started, I realigned my priorities and found better things to do with my time.

Wow. I think what the OP has listed could be worse than cheating, which is common at my school, especially the AP classes.
