Competitive high school?

what makes such a high school? I know one factor is if they send a certain number of kids to top schools. I'm surious about how my school stands in your eyes. It is public, current senior class is 270ish.

These are the acceptances, from ED only:

Stanford - 2
Yale - 1
Pomona - 2
UPenn - 1
Georgetown - 1

Is this mediocre? again, this doesn't include RD results.

You also have to taken into account about the # of AP/IB kids, the average GPA, and other numbers. Lots of schools have the same stats as those when it comes to college acceptances.

I sortof disagree about the avg GPA and # of AP/IB kids. Just because a school has a high avg GPA doesnt mean anything, there could be massive grade inflation. Same with AP kids; some schools just let anyone into an AP class. Scores on AP tests should be taken into account. SAT scores also.

some stats i pulled off of our school website:

Over ninety percent of the 278 graduates indicated they would enroll in college.
Two were National Merit Scholars.
One was a National Merit Scholar Finalists.
Seven were National Merit Commended Scholars.
Two hundred and two students took 361 Advanced Placement tests. Of those tests taken, eighty-three percent received a passing score of 3 or higher.
Average SAT score was 1173, 11% above the state of Oregon average and 14% above the national average.
One hundred and forty-one scholarships, grants and/or financial awards were awarded.
One hundred and fifty received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence by maintaining a GPA between 3.3 and 4.0.
One hundred and seven received the Faculty Honor Award by maintaining a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0.

How competitive a school is or isn't is a relative thing & can be measured in any number of ways. It all depends on what you are comparing your school with & why.

For example, the HS my son attends generally has about 200+ seniors & typically sends about 99% to 4-year colleges--with maybe one going community college & one had a gap year (or similar). It offers 18 AP courses. In 2004, 762 AP Examinations were written, with 79% earning scores of 4 or 5 and 96% receiving scores of 3, 4, or 5. In the class of 2005, 189 (84%) seniors are participants in the AP Program. Every year, the school has 20+ to 30+ National Merit Semi-Finalists. It is considered a competitive high school.

yea - that does sound intense

When you tell other kids from other schools (IB or not) that you are in full-IB at my school and they shudder!

Our school is ranked #1 public and #3 overall in the province. Our IB program is reputed to be the toughest in the city, and it's also the only one with French Immersion IB.

This is only where my friends got in:
3 Stanford
4 Harvard
3 Yale
1 Princeton
1 Penn
2 Cornell
1 Columbia
1 Brown

holy cow tchaikovsky - that's amazing!

lollipop27 drafted

my high school profile -

99% attend college

77% got 3 or better on AP exams

offers twenty-five AP courses

was in top fifty of newsweek's article in top 100 public schools in america, i think

96 ppl have gone 2 ivy leagues in the last five years (out of classes of roughly 200)

my own feedback - here in eighth grade, my friends have already begun to discuss courses and AP's. and yes they do have a life. furthermore, its fact that we dont have as much chance as getting into an ivy as others. we live in an extremely competetive area and the ivies can only take so much from our new york area. that totally sucks. :(
