Competitive schools with beautiful campuses?

I've slowly started to realize that at least for me, surroundings matter a lot when it comes to colleges. I thought amherst college was perfect for me until I realized in many ways it looks like a scene out of the crucible. And many other LAC's appear to be in the middle of nowhere. Of course I'm basing this on the scarce pictures I can find on the interwebz, so feel free to correct me. Right now I'm obsessed with Harvard, not for the brand name, but because I've been in the surrounding area of cambridge and boston and loved it to death. Thankfully the only safety I've been able to get excited about, BU, isn't that far away. That said, what colleges have you guys visited that have outstanding or interesting surroundings, yet are still fairly competitive (like <50% admission rate)? I'm really interested in seemingly small factors such as this as I realize that many schools have what I'm looking for educationally but look like they're a bore to be in. Help me out?

Boston college and northeastern

Trinity College in Hartford and Holy Cross have beautiful campuses

UVA has a pretty bangin’ campus

Are you female? Wellesley.

Try looking for a school in a city like NYC or Boston (I know you said yo loved it already), someone said this already but take a look at Boston College.

U Delaware has a beautiful campus.

My concern is, is BC too far removed from Boston’s urban center?

Swarthmore and Wellesley.

6 miles away, but the T is right next to campus.it’s also along commonwealth avenue which goes right into the city. I was there yesterday, and overall it’s close.

Boston College sounds perfect for you. You like Boston, want a nice campus, and a school that is competitive. You can see the Pru across the Reservoir and the T can get you into Boston extremely fast. BC is a great school, great campus, and easy access to the city.

Bryn Mawr has an absolutely amazing campus

Time for you to take a trip out west and check out Stanford.

Pomona in CA is beautiful! It is part of the Claremont Consortium with adjacent colleges Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Mudd/engineering, Scripps/girls.

If you like Boston/city, look at Northeastern. It is more “campus-y” than BU, but with terrific city access and excellent co-op opportunities. Boston College is a little further out from town, but beautiful and still accessible to the T.

The other really beautiful (and still fairly competitive) universities in the west are UCSB (University of California at Santa Barbara):

http://commutingfromcop.files.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2009/11/ucsb-aerial.gif

and UCSD (University of California at San Diego):

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_N1PQYrXK8LU/TAa1c0wPuaI/AAAAAAAAANI/2wGWtzhcCiQ/s1600/UCSD.jpg

UC Berkeley is also fairly nice in that it has a great central square and beautiful views of SF:

but is not generally as beautiful as the others mentioned

Duke comes to mind.

Oh definitely Columbia, Brown, Harvard, Penn, Georgetown and Hopkins. My top two favorites were Columbia and Brown.

I didn’t really like Princeton, Chicago and George Washington when I visited.

Most beautiful campus
+
rigorous academics
+

low admission rate (17%)

= Middlebury College

Someone mentioned Trinity College - pretty campus, yes. But it’s in an AWFUL area.

I would add UC Berkeley to the list of beautiful campuses in the west.

Tufts! But I’m biased ;).
