competitive, snobby, southern valedictorians?

some people told me that rice was full of competitive, snobby, southern valedictorians. what's the extent of the validity to that statement?

Competitive and southern is probably true to a big extent. Snobby, from what I've seen of Rice, is absolutely not.

Nah... Rice has nice people. Southern? Do you mean people drawling in a Texas twang? Or Southern belles? My daughter is from Texas, but has/is neither. I think there are very few, if any.

That isn't true at all. Well they are competitive, but I don't think many act very Southern. There are definitely a lot of Texans, but they don't "seem" Southern. Also, it is so hard to get into Rice if you are a Texan that it turns out that a lot of them are the valedictorians of their classes.... So I guess it is actually kinda true. I don't think that Rice is FULL of these type of people.

We are definitely not snobby though. Everyone here is so nice and accepting. I just want to emphasize again that the students here are not snobby. No one looks down on you for your beliefs or looks down on you for anything else.

I would have to say that Texas is more like the west coast than the south. That is from what little I have seen of the state so I could be very very wrong.

There are those Texas stereotypes again...and let me tell you, coming from the North East (CT to be exact!), that's what I thought of Texas before I came to Rice. But in reality, it's GREAT down here and I love it! People are definitely not like that - sure, a handful are Southern, but Rice people are definitely NOT snobby (everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming here), and while Rice people work hard, they're competitive with themselves, not each other.

Hey I didn't know that you were on here too twinklestar146! I won't reveal your true identity, but I want to point out that I have 170 posts... You only have 164....

Okay so some of us are competetive about stupid things like that. And there is a lot of competition between colleges, but everyone knows that Lovett is the best.

Lets just say my daughter chose Rice because it did not seem to be those things and she is very happy. And we are from the NE. Last Spring (freshman year) she visited friends at several top NE universities and colleges (Ivy & top 5 small colleges) and that trip only confirmed that she made the right decision. She described HS-like comeptitive and stressed obsession with grades at several schools she visited. The only real exception was Wellesley.

Could not be farther from the truth! I am from the South so I think that being Southern is a good thing :) But really, you wouldn't be able to tell in my opinion that we are located in the South. As for snobby...not true at all! Any attempt to show off your SAT score or class rank is usually met with confused stares...everyone else probably did as well or better than you! The stress and competition are self-induced. I really haven't ANY competition between students, which is a welcome change from high school. And as for valedictorians...I was hanging out with a group of about 8 friends one night and I discovered that I was the only non-val! But you would never know it because it's not really a big deal here. Hope that helps!

well like down in texas, we dont have carpet or electricity. we usually get around by horseback or wagon. my daily outfit consists of 10 gallon cowboy hat, set of boots with matching spurs, and a TEXAS sized belt buckle. oh yeah, we dont have A/C, umm maybe think about investing in an umbrella hat or spray bottle/fan combo device, which can be found at the nearest walmart, yes we ACTUALLY have walmart here.

i dont see rice being snobby

It can't be any worse than Alaska. I mean we all live in igloos and drive around in dog sleds. Our wardrobe consists of parkas made out of all the little animals we have trapped. Oh and smartguy86 what is the meaning of this electricity word you use? We burn seal and whale fat for our light. And Wal Mart, heck we just go and harpoon a whale whenever we need food. In fact if we ever have a spare moment we whip out a totem pole.

Basically I think that all steretypes are pretty much wrong. And interestingly enough I can actually get most people down in the lower 48 to believe that we do live in igloos!

Alaska isn't as bad as texas. We usually ignore you guys, or forget that you are still a state hehe. But Texas is so big and so full of people that everyone can play the stereotype since probably everyone in america has a friend that grew up in Texas.

You only forget about us because of the stupid mapmakers!! I can't tell you how many people think that we are located somewhere down near Hawaii. Also very few people realize that you chould chop Alaska in half and each half would still be bigger than Texas! It is fun to mess with people though and make them believe some pretty crazy stuff about Alaska.

Haha an exotic hometown would be a lot of fun I'm sure. I've been to fairbanks before, but I don't remember anything except for flourescent fire hydrants and a moose that stopped us in the middle of the road. I was little.

Houston though is just like any other town in America. When I visited rice, I heard probably 5 or 6 different languages, but no southern drawls at all. I refuse to believe that Houston is actually a part of the rest of Texas.
