competitive summer internship strategy advice

Hi.

I'm a chem e major. On my school's career service website, I found a listing of an internship in Cambridge, MA that's focused on research in photovoltics. I'm very interested in exploring more into this area, but haven't really gotten around to really start a research project with a professor who does it, yet. So far, my research positions have been focused almost exclusively on polymers and hydrogels.

This internship accepts not only engineering majors, but also physics, chemistry, etc. It also accepts international students. So I'm assuming it will be extremely hard to get in, especially with the fact that I'm an international student, and my Total GPA is only 3.5ish. Engineering core is 3.85ish..

The listing appeared on 9/15/11, and the application is due 1/15/12. The applciation consists of a resume and a cover letter. No mention of letter of rec or anything like that. It would probably be best to submit my application months before the deadline because they might do rolling admissions. But at the same time, I want to take some time to read some research papers to really familiarize myself with solar cells. I want to seem like I know what I'm talking about.

Any advice?
