Competitiveness of Engineering Masters Admissions

Hey everyone. I’m an electrical engineering major at a small state school in Ohio and I graduate with my bacherlor’s degree this December. I’m planning to apply to Cal Poly for a master’s in electrical engineering. I’m very attracted to the school’s reputation among companies as well as the small school/college town vibe that it seems to have.

My question is this: how competitive are the engineering graduate admissions at Cal Poly? Specifically, how about for electrical engineering? There’s obviously much more discussion about undergrad admissions, but I haven’t seen much for potential grad students.

I’m graduating with above a 3.7 in my major. I’m taking the GRE in a few weeks and, judging by the diagnostic tests I’ve taken, I’ll probably get around a 158-160 on the quant section. Other than that, I have plenty of engineering work experience and very little research experience. Does anyone have any idea what my chances for admissions would be?

I think you have a good shot at it! Cal Poly has a great undergraduate reputation, but their graduate school isn’t as impacted I believe. So you should be all set to go! It’s great at Cal Poly, hope you enjoy it!

Thank you for the response! That’s really good to hear because I’m very uncertain about grad school admissions chances.

Not to get my own thread off-topic but do you think Cal Poly’s masters programs lack the reputation of its undergrad engineering program? I’ve been impressed by the career prospects and looking through previous years employment results. But it’d be nice to have people with more familiarity with the school give their thoughts.
