Hey guys, I'm a bio major applying to ucla. I'm just wondering if having IGETC completed (though not required) boosts your chance at admission AT ALL? I need 1 last class and I'd honestly rather not take it, I've done 18 units each semester and wanted to chill next semester taking 14 instead of 17. However, if finishing IGETC would actually increase my chance even a bit, I'd rather do it. I'll have a 3.9 GPA and TAP, thanks!

dude as a bio major with that gpa…i think you’re in. i really dont think you have to take that last class, however there may be some benefits for after you transfer. im not a high unit major or anything so i don’t know how it works though, but you might want to look into it. do you have to still do some general ed after you transfer? if yes, i think you should totes do that last igetc class. if not then **** it

I am in a similar situation as the OP and completely agree with redoplease.

I am finishing my last IGETC class just because I do not want to have to take any GE classes after my transfer. Plus, UCLA science classes are not significantly harder than CCC science classes, however, UCLA GE classes are much much harder than CCC GE classes.

Maybe take it over winter semester?

With that GPA, you’re pretty much in. IGETC isn’t required and they won’t make you furfill it once you transfer. Also it doesn’t make your application look better either. but if you want to go for it.

@collegeis4losers:

True, they do not make you “finish IGETC” after transfer but if you have not finished IGETC they DO make you take more GE classes at the UC.

Well I could always finish my last class (philosophy) next summer at community college no?
I’m just wondering if “having it complete” in a way boosts your chances?

I’ve done more general ed than necessary in the social science section.

Just wondering, have u finished all your pre-reqs? (cal I&II, 2 sem bio, 2 sem gen chem, 2 sem org chem, 2 sem physics)

@nabilsemail:

First off, yes, completing IGETC does, in general, increase your chances for admission. In your case, however, you have a great chance of acceptance without completing the philosophy class.

Second, yes, you can complete your IGETC requirements in summer. However, to obtain IGETC certification all classes must be completed or in progress. So completing that class in summer will not help you admissions-wise. In fact, they will consider you “IGETC minus 1” or missing one class.

I would ask you this, does it not make sense to complete it in spring? I mean the pros seem to outway the cons considerably. You WOULD obtain IGETC certification, increasing you chances at admission and you would also be able to have a longer summer vacation during your transition to the UC system.

All this just for working a little harder in your last semester at a CCC? Seems like a good idea to me…

Ahh, well that clears things up that IGETC will help. My whole thing is that I’ve really done 18 units each semester and taken summer and winter class (and have to take winter calc 1 with my quarter chem class), so I’m pretty drained. This spring I’m taking Ochem, Calc 2, and Intro to biotechnology (and philosophy) so my classes are going to be a bit time consuming. I also wanted to work for once haha.

But yeah, if it improves my chance, then i’ll do it.
Thanks for the help guys

^ Calc 1 in winter… G luck… its tough in the winter…

Ochem 1 or ochem 2 in spring? Do you have physics done too?

I took Calc 1 in winter. It was not bad at all, VERY time consuming but definitely doable.

Well I’m pretty good at math! So I think it’ll be doable! I couldn’t get a chem class at my college during Fall so I enrolled in Chem 14a, taking 14b during winter quarter, and 14C (ochem) during spring. Hopefully that will count as my prereq.

(I won’t have labs done since they arent offered to extension students during the year, and the 14 series breaks up chem into 2 quarters and ochem into 2 quarters).

I won’t have physics done, but that is a recommended class not a prereq no?

^^ On assist.org, physics is under pre-reqs…

What CC do you go to? At my CC (MT.SAC), they dont offer any chem… during winter/summer besides intro to gen chem which is not a pre-req…

I’ll be taking gen chem I in the spring…

Woah, you’re taking gen chem II and cal I in the winter?
