Completing the 60 unit req in the summer prior

So I have admission to UCD, UCSB, UCSC, UCR, and UCM as an economics major. However I am currently taking calculus 1 and am most likely not going to pass. If i withdraw I will only have 55 transferable units so i have a problem. Has anyone faced a similar situation? Is there a chance a UC would let me take the class over the summer or am I SOL if I fail/withdraw? Im going to call UC's tomorrow but id like to know if anyone has dealt with a similar issue. thanks.

I think your admission will be rescinded if you do that. They’re anal about the 60 units being completed by spring.

I think you’d have a better chance getting a D in the class. With a D, you still get your units, and they may allow you to make up the grade in the summer. If you drop below 60 units I’m 98.9% sure you’re screwed.

Wait, so a UC could potentially accept a D grade then let me retake at their school?

@rhere0‌ - yes that is what they are saying. You have a much better chance to be given permission to raise a grade over the summer than you have of getting permission to getting to 60 units.

Follow through with your calls, but they are very strict with units.
Be prepared to tell them why you are getting the grade you are getting and what you are doing to try and raise it.

There’s a slim possibility that they may not revoke your admission with a D. You may be required to take it over at your current school, not UCLA. I’m not saying this is doable, but it’s almost guaranteed without 60 units you will have your admission rescinded. I’m just throwing out an idea that MIGHT possibly work better than going below 60 units. You should definitely call them to get more info.

A D is not worth it. That’s basically a guaranteed rescind whereas if you drop, you can explain your situation and hopefully make it up over summer. I think some people on the ucla thread is doing that.

As others have stated you have a better chance taking a D and retaking it during summer. This is however if they accept it. But its better of a chance than falling below the units.

So UCR told me they would still admit me as a sophomore if I withdrew from the course. UCD told me to take the letter grade and if my overall GPA was still high enough after spring I MAY still be admitted. UCSB told me they could not officially advise me until I had received the letter grade. Ive yet to hear back from UCSC and UCM.

@rhere0‌ surprisingly it seems as if your best bet may be to drop the course and go to UCR. What are you going to do?

It’s a tough one. You do have some comments from different UCs but it’s only as good as the person telling it to you. The fact that you will have a D in calculus on top of being a Econ major is not good. Plus my limited experience is they’re fanatical about math.

But you need 60 units by spring, as far as I can tell. I say take the class, then come up with something that made it a setback and see if you can retake in summer. Maybe the guy had such a thick accent you couldn’t understand what he was saying.
