completion of igetc required?

I am currently in my first year of cc, and plan on applying to ucs next fall, i am a moleular bio. major and was wondering if i will have to complete the igetc before i transfer or apply, i have started some of the classes for igetc(around 30 units of the 45 completed), but am now concentrating more on my major pre reqs. Just wondering if anyone knew

it’s very easy to complete IGETC as well as your major pre-reqs as many will overlap and cover certain areas in both. it is highly recommended to complete IGETC by the spring before transfer and i don’t believe that UCLA or UCB will accept you without it being completed, especially if you want to be competitive against every other student that has it done.

hmm i see, is it also important to complete all the pre req classes for your major before you transfer, or do ucs not really care, as long as your gpa is high?

the IGETC must be completed by Spring for the Fall admission. If you want to go the TAG route you need to your Math and English completed by the Fall semester the year before you plan on attending.

what is the difference between the “tag route” and one with a specific major?

tag route is with a specific major and it has conditions on completing IGETC and obtaining a certain GPA to be guaranteed admission to some colleges, such as UCSD. pre-reqs are extremely important to finish before transfer, as well as IGETC, and it is perfectly capable to do both and then some.

I know plenty of people who got into ucla/ucb without completing igetc. If youre major is a high unit major, then just complete the minimum eligibility requirements + major requirements. Ive asked many counselors/ucla admissions officers about this and they all said the same thing.

I don’t know if this is correct but I heard that even without a tag agreement, that if you complete IGETC, and prereqs and have over 3.6 GPA with solid essays even a competitive major you get in. I hope this is correct. Like all of the people who have been rejected in the past by majors like business economics they just didn’t finish their prereqs, and no matter how high their GPA was they didn’t get in. Of course having TAG is important but in my case since my insane counselor didn’t even recommend me to take it, I hope that I still have the chance to get in. let’s all hope for the best. take care everyone

Actually, it depends on your major. I believe that all the engineering majors do not require to complete IGTEC. You can check those information from assist.org. They will tell u what u need for transferring.
[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org)

IGETC is just a recommended route for transferring to fulfill all the Lower GE’s for most of the UC’s. It’s required for Transfer Admission Guarentee (TAG) but not required for regular admissions.

MakeBank, but if I finished IGETC without TAP at UCLA would that make me competitive plus a GOOD GPA?

chesserforlife - It would make you competitive if you had a good GPA. IGETC is not required and it will not necessarily give you an advantage at transferring (I called the UCLA admissions counselor). What really matters as they told me, are how well you have done in transferrable units, overall GPA, what you’ve done during the time in college, and most importantly how you have done on your major prereq courses.

TAP will definantly give you much more of an advantage but it will not benefit you if you do not have a high gpa to complement it. So IGETC doesn’t give you an advantage at any point of the admissions process, UNLESS it comes down to TAG agreement contract in which IGETC is required.

hey there I am getting more confused and confused as days are passing along. But ok to what I know the REAL GPA that counts is the UC TRANSFERABLE one right?. When I hear overall GPA, your talking about those classes like the lower level math, lower level english, etc but I think they don’t care. there’s this friend of mine who got all B’s and C’s but got A’s and B’s on UC transf and got in. I honestly did better on the uc transferable one’s and the major courses. On the one’s that didn’t say UC, CSU i think I got straight B’s on them. I haven’t gotten a C ever hope that counts too. Because what I usually do is say my UC transferable gpa which was 3.75 by the end of fall, and then its lower like 3.68 or 3.70 overall. I am getting very confused by all this. But let’s all hope we can get in. time is nearing and it’s time to get prepared for admission decisions! good luck everyone, hope to hear from your response makebank

chesserforlife - Yes you are right. The real GPA that counts when reviewing for admissions is the UC transferrable courses (if you are applying to UC’s). When talking about remedial courses and courses that are lower level and do not transfer over to your desired university, the UC’s will not necessarily care about those courses when calculating the overall admissions GPA.

So when I meant overall GPA, I actually meant the transferrable GPA. If you are coming from an out of state or private institution, the transferring of credits is a little different. When I mean different, it means that you can be able to petition for courses that the UC thought was not transferrable. This can only be done when first being accepted, when you are in then you can be able to petition.
