I took the Calculus BC exam and scored a 5 on both the BC and AB parts. At the community college I am going to attend, this excuses me from MATH226+227, analytic geometry/calculus levels I and II.

It get a little bit complex here though. I took the assessment test on a day I was feeling sick and sleepy, and got placed into MATH104+105(the prerequisites for calculus).

Do you suppose that my AP scores will satisfy the prerequisites as well as the 226 and 227 level courses? Also, is it too late to mail off my scores, or is it possible to make an appoitment at the school to submit my scores? I would love if I could just start with MATH228.

Thanks collegeconfidential community,
Your advice is always great

No one here could possibly answer this question as each college has its own standards for course placement. You need to discuss your situation with the appropriate person at the school. Don’t hesitate to call–if you have already been assigned an advisor, start with that person.

AP scores should dwarf the assessment test, you should be fine to register for the next class in the sequence. I’d be surprised if they didn’t allow you, that would be pretty backwards.

At many schools, the AP exams do not trump the placement exams. At Purdue, for instance, they do not rely on the AP exam and they consider their test a better indicator of success in mathematics. You will need to talk to your advisor.

Remember, the advice here is only as good as the advisor. Go to the source.

Sometimes students who have been concentrating on advanced math skills lose accuracy with lower-level skills. Being sick can make things even worse. If you find out that you need to re-take the placement exam, be sure to review the material that it covers, and get a good night’s sleep beforehand so that your brain is rested and ready to deal with the subject.
