Complicated class situation

Hello CC community. I’m a senior in my last (or what hopes) 4 months of High school.
I want to go to school to learn coding so I can land a career in game design because I love working with computers. However, my GPA is kind of a low average (like 2.9). I also didn’t score that well on the ACT (like an 18). I guess im just trying to find out what my options are. I have enough credits to graduate, but will any school accept me?

Try to get your GPA to at least 3. A 3.0 already looks significantly better than a 2.9.

Most “safety” schools (e.g. in-state universities with large acceptance rates) should accept you, but you must note their application deadlines. Also, you can attend a community college then transfer to a university.

As a current math/CS major, programming and [video] game design involve quite a few topics, including logic, algorithms, and game theory, which are all very mathematics-intensive. So having a strong mathematics background will definitely help if you wish to pursue such a career.

thank you so much! If you could answer one more question for me that would be awesome. I currently don’t have any math classes, and admittedly, im pretty bad at it. If I were to study hard and take online math courses alongside my in school classes, could I increase my GPA?

Yes, as long as you ace the online class. First, find out if you can take one for credit.

If not, it will still be a good idea to have completed at least precalculus (calculus is better). For a CS major, you will likely take linear algebra and discrete mathematics, among other courses.

thank you!

You still have time to bring up that gpa to at least a 3.0 (In the mean time, focus on your academics)
