Complicated Question regarding Early Decision.

Hey guys, my names matt. I have decided that I would like to apply ED to JHU. now i have 2 questions about this that even secretaries at JHU failed to answer:

If I am accepted, but do not get enough financial aid to attend (my parents make less then 25,000), I have the ability to opt out of the agreement correct?

The contract states I must withdraw from all other applications. However, say for example I DONT get enough aid as mentioned in question 1. Am I allowed to wait until after I figure out the aid amount to withdraw my apps to other colleges?

Thank you very much,
Matt

Yes and yes. That’s actually an easy question. From the Common App ED agreement:

Make sure that you and your parents carefully fill out the FA forms as accurately as possible. The FA letter you’ll get if you’re admitted ED will be an estimate, not a guarantee, based on the information you provide. If there’s a big change between the info you provide in the fall of 2011 versus what you provide in the spring of 2012, that can impact your final FA offer.

thanks a million. I originally saw the common app contract and understood everything, but after calling JHU to confirm, I was quite confused. In fact, two secretaries told me I cannot withdraw from the contract for fiscal reasons, and a person from the financial aid department told me I could, but I could “not apply to other colleges at all under ED”. I was a bit frustrated with their understanding of the college system to say the least.

That is so hard to answer…they keep changing the answer…last year I heard yes you don’t have to go. However previously years it wasn’t like that. Go to JHU forum and ask the rep

Since it is like 3days after you figure out your estimated fin aid offer then yeah u can wait til then.

It’s true that you cannot apply ED to another college, or at least not ED1. Maybe that’s what they were getting at.

JHU states that you need to follow the agreement language laid out in the application, be that the common app or the universal app. It’s a little worrisome that the people you called in the admissions office couldn’t give that as an answer.

Exactly, it was even more disturbing that they were contradicting themselves. I do still have plenty of faith in JHU, its an amazing school.

If you really need FA that much why are you applying ED to JHU? They don’t promise to meet need.
