Complicated: UT Austin vs A&M Engineering

Abstract: got into A&M engineering, but not UTs. Got into my second choice for UT (Business). Ranked top 3% of class. I have every intention of being admitted to UT engineering (EE)

Question: Should i start at A&M Engineering, and plan to transfer to UT? Or is it better to start at UT, and hope that they'll allow me to transfer in? any suggestions? tips? advice?

What I know: 24 units required at UT before applying for transfer to engineering school. As for transferring from A&M, I think I'd have to wait one year.

Anyone in a similar situation? Which option would grant me higher chances of being admitted to UT Austin engineering?

Thanks

If your preference is UT, I would start there and transfer from Business to Engineering. I think it’s much easier to do inter-department transfers from within the same school than to transfer in from a completely different school.

I’m sorry, I don’t have an answer for you, but I’m curious about something. You were admitted into McCombs as a second choice major but not your first, engineering. What specific program did you apply to? I thought McCombs was more selective than Cockrell. I’m very curious about this.

don’t really know what I applied for. Maybe you can tell me where to check. I’m not really interested in Business, but just put that down as a choice since I had to choose 3. The letter said I got admitted to my second choice in the McCombs school.

For my first choice, I know I selected EE

McCombs you go in as general busines and don’t declare a major until after you have completed a specific set of classes.

I asked about this on your A&M thread too, curious as to your stats beyond class rank.

EE must be REALLY competitive at UT to be bumped into business!!

I responded in the other thread

I think UT Engineering weights SAT/Course-load pretty heavily. Also, when did you apply?

I applied by the deadline. It was sometime in January this year. I applied for Fall 2009 admit

^^ UT has rolling admissions. It’s always better to apply early.

^^ I know but that doesn’t really help my situation right now

You can try to change your major during UT freshmen orientation before you register for classes.

You can also take your basic classes your first semester at UT and then try to transfer. Check the degree plan you want then take those classes. It would help your transfer chances if to took physics and calculus your first semester.

make sure you take the physics and calculus that engineers take…

Through with the CAP program, you only have to have a 3.2 to get into UT. Regular transfer students need 3.7+ so I’d say it’s definately easier to transfer from UTs business to Engineering than from A&M Engineering to UT Engineering - unless you’re extremely sure you’re going to get a 4.0 and going to A&M will save you tons of money. Also some credits may not transfer from A&M to UT. If you go to UT, your first few semesters are mostly basics and you can talk to a counselor and theyll help you prepare for switching to Engineering.
