hi,
i just would like to know if you have to take tests (like piano ecc) when you start an undergraduate program (b.m.) in composition??? Thanks

Almost all music schools will make non-keyboard majors in a BM program take a piano placement test at the start of their first semester. They make pretty much everyone take theory/ear training placement tests, although that sometimes gets done at the admission auditions or over the summer between high school and the start of college.

…thanks…anyone knows how dificult the piano pieces are?! my piano skills are very limited!!! (so i can practice this summer a bit!)

The particular pieces they use and the format of the test probably vary from place to place. I see from the Master List that you are headed to Hartt. Perhaps some current Hartt students or parents (violadad?) can comment on this. Or, you could contact the school directly and ask.

Be careful about working up a small number of pieces to the point that you appear to be a better keyboard player than you really are. That might just get you put in a higher piano class where it would be very time consuming to keep up with the others. Taking some private piano lessons over the summer would probably be a good thing if you are weak in that department and interested in composition. Just do it from the viewpoint of improving your overall skill level rather than cramming for the test.

EDIT: crossposted with anther entry that seems to have gone missing, but which was quite correct that playing a set piece is likely to be only a small part of the test and that there are going to be scales, chord progressions and the like.

My son did not recall a mandatory piano skills test. He had never taken piano lessons, but was proficient on the keyboard and wanted the formal training. Unless you have the appropriate skill level and request to test, there are four 4 semesters of piano. I’d follow the advice in BassDad’s edit for basic preparation.

The BM composition curricum is detailed here:

The theory and aural skills test info for Hartt is below, copied from their website. I assumed you took these two at your audition.

<The theory and aural skills Audition Information for Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts degrees:
Audition requirements are arranged by instrument or voice. All applicants, regardless of major, must audition with the same requirements.

On the audition day, all music applicants must also take:

The Music Theory Placement Test
Written theory testing determines course placement (Fundamentals or Harmony). Areas covered include scales, intervals, triads, rhythmic notation, and music terminology.

The Music Aptitude Profile Test
The Music Aptitude Profile (MAP) measures innate rhythmic and melodic talent and potential for growth.

Musicianship Test for Vocal Applicants
This short test, completed following the voice audition, consists of sight-reading and basic piano skills.>

Yeah Bassdad, I was wondering what happend to my post??? Hmmmmm

Double Hmmmmm back at you. I assumed you had deleted it for reasons that were not obvious to me. It looked innocuous enough, so perhaps it was just a glitch in the vast CC database of posts.
