Composition portfolio applications

I noticed that all the schools I am applying to ask for compact discs (not just one disc). Do they really want a separate CD for each score, or is it okay to just put all the recordings on to one CD and clearly label what's on it? I would prefer to do the latter.

One CD is general practice.

Thank you very much, I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy 12+ CDs and cases etc, seems pretty wasteful. Thanks again.

Yes, but make sure you clearly label the tracks, and perfectly cue the recording to line up with the scores if you're doing excerpts of larger compositions.

How would suggest I do excerpts of pieces. I'm submitting 3 pieces to each school. One of them is four movements long and probably 20 or something minutes total. I was just going to submit the entire because of the importance of the entire thing, would this be a bad idea?

Some schools, like Juilliard, ask you to pick an excerpt that you consider your best work, for each piece (I think it was 3 minutes, but could be wrong).

If the school says to submit 3 pieces, and says nothing about selecting an excerpt, then the school wants the pieces in their entirety, I think.

Gee, we never even thought of putting everything on one disc!

Isn't labelling hard if the pieces are all in one CD? I seem to remember that every disc has to have your name, the degree you are applying for, the name of the piece, the instruments/musicians, date and place where it was played etc. Ditto the insert for the case.

Then again, maybe our daughter did a lot of extra work that wasn't needed...

Every school will have a site explaining what they want. Usually all compositions go on one CD, all voice pieces go on another CD, and so on, because at liberal arts colleges the admissions office usually sends the CDs to the specific person to listen to it. You label the CD and the case because there is a chance the two items will get separated. I have been told by some people to put your best piece first and that very often the listeners will skip around and listen to only segments. I never heard of anyone listening to 20 minutes of music.

^Welcome to the music forum GW! You might want to check the date of the OP’s email, I think they may have already had a resolution (let’s hope!) :)
