hi,

i'm a comp sci major at UCI and i'm going into my second year as a compsci major. Any questions or concerns let me know.

Does UC Irvine weight math/science grades when admitting students into the CS major?

what do you think about Informatics?

I am also interested in the informatics major and will probably be applying with it as my first choice. Any info would be appreciated.

what were ur courses in ur first year and how were they?

sorry i've been neglecting this forum a bit. but i'm back now. :D

jackbauer: when they admit any student to UCI they look at their weighted GPA along with extra curriculars and SAT scores. Informatics is mostly about learning about programming, artificial intelligence, medicine. Basically how i see it, it's about combining computers with other subjects, such as biology, chemistry, etc. Check out this website for more info: undergraduate degree in informatics @ the bren school of information and computer sciences

if you do get accepted as an informatics major and decide to switch, no problem, once you are in the donald bren school of computer science, you can switch into any other comp sci major such as, comp sci and engineering, information technology, or even the new business information management (BIM) major.

chickenboi8008: if you check out this website: undergraduate education @ the bren school of information and computer sciences and select your specific comp sci major, you will see a "sample course guide" it is a HUGE BENEFIT to follow that guide. it bascially maps out your 4 years and tells you what to take when. You can take things out of order, but the way the course guide is mapped out is excellent. The counselors have mapped out the guide in a rigid but flexible way since they know that some courses are only offered once a year and some are not.

Thanks for the info.
I'm aware that they look at the weighted GPA but I thought they place more emphasis on grades that correlate to the intended major (eg math grades for CS majors, bio grades for bio majors). Is that the case?

well, i'm not sure how the admissions department deals with GPA vs individual grades. But if they are deciding between you and another person it always helps if you have an A in math and the other person has a B

Hey concerned707!

I'm glad to see you making your own FAQ thread. It's really great to help others out especially as a compsci major yourself. I hope you enjoyed your first year. Time is going by fast though, you know? GL with compsci. <3 EECS bwahaha.

This is my timetable for Fall 2008:

ICS 23
MATH 6G
MATH 6D

Is this too little units ? Also, How is ICS 23 in respect to difficulty ?

For someone who is not sure of whether to major in informatics or information and computer science, which class would you recommend to take? Informatics 41 or ICS 21 since they are both accepted as interchangeable required courses

crazykumar: your schedule is a bit odd for the fall, r u a freshman entering uci? ics 23 is being taught in the fall by goodrich who i've never had. But when i took ics 23 with pattis it wasn't bad. Pattis had a tendency to offer many office hours and would always keep in contact with his students.

Math 6D is basically about math from a comp sci major's perspective. Alot of the times the teacher will explain a math problem from the perspective of a comp sci major. For example, when explaining sorting numbers in math using box and tail method the teacher can refer to arrays in java.

I'm taking math 6G fall 2008 so maybe i'll see you there.

The units are not too little, it's just a weird mix, since you will have two math classes.

halberklown: I've never taken an informatics class before, but if you are not sure about your major you can take an informatics class and an ics class and explore your options. Talk to a counselor about what you want to focus on and then decide your major.

if you take ics 21 i recommend jacobson. his assignments are fun and easy to learn. He also does a lot of hand holding since it is a beginners course. The downside is that he can sometimes put you to sleep. But i guess that's the same with a lot of the comp sci teachers.

anyone that can answer my question?
