Computational Linguistics Programs

(also posted this in Engineering and Graduate)

Another question (or two) about computational linguistics:

1)What are some good Master's programs for computational linguistics? I already know of U of Washington, Georgetown, and Carnegie Mellon. Any others?

2)I'm currently entering my sophomore year, a linguistics major without any CS experience (yet). I'm currently brushing up on my math and hoping to place into calculus some time in the next school year, and I'm also going to take introductory programming courses. The point is, I'd be coming at a CompLing grad program from a heavily linguistics-oriented background. I'll try to incorporate as much CS as possible but I don't think I'll be able to complete a double-major, or even the minor in the time I have left. Should I stay an extra year of undergrad to do more CS, or just try and do as much as possible in 4 years?

I know it's preferable to be more CS-oriented than ling-oriented for this type of program, but I'm already dedicated to my language/linguistics course of study. Any advice?

Thanks

1) UTexas, UArizona, Brandeis, UIndiana, Brown…
2) As you said, it would be preferable to have more CS. But I don’t think you need to take an extra year. Just do as much as you can (while taking math and stats courses too) and if the grad program thinks your CS isn’t up to par they’ll allow you to take an extra year or half year to take CS courses at their university first. Lots of people enter CL from a linguistics background, don’t worry. Practice programming as much as you can and you’ll be alright.

Thanks. I’m thinking I’ll be able to do Programming in Java and then Data Structures. I will also take Calculus A and B (hopefully I’ll pass) and statistics. That should be ok? Maybe a few more CS classes but they require a lot of pre-reqs at my school.

If you can master Java then yeah, I think you’ll be alright when applying to grad schools. As I said, they’ll catch you up if they think it’s necessary.
