Computer Engineer Major??

Is there such a major at Berkeley? I know there is an EECS major which focuses on Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, but is there one that focuses on just computer engineering? My uncle was a computer engineer major at SFSU and had a degree in both hardware and software. I would like to follow his path and major in compute engineering, preferably the hardware side because computer science doesn't seem to suit me.

Sorry, it is either CS or EECS. You still have to do some software no matter how much you’re interested in hardware. Of course, having to know everything is rewarded with countless number of internship and job offers that you’ll never have to worry about…

A more detailed answer to your question is in the Engineering Majors forum where you asked the same question.

The short answer is that you can major in EECS or L&S CS and take courses like CS 150, 152, 162, EE 140-series, and (optionally) the graduate level CS 250-series and EE 240-series for your major courses, although L&S CS will effectively require a few more software and theory CS courses.

EECS is actually a more flexible computer engineering degree. You see, under EECS, you get to choose one of five options, where, in terms of accreditation, options I-IV lead to an ECE degree and option V leads to a CS degree.

If you take the right set of courses, you’ll have what’s equivalent to a computer engineering degree. Yes, you will have to do some software, but not much.

To give you an idea of how wide the range of courses is: I’m a third-year who’s done with all the upper-division requirements, with only one AC remaining. I have some friends who are also in EECS and are graduating this semester who have never taken any upper-division course that I’ve taken.
